Jumping the gun a bit but does anyone know what colour these will be painted? After issue 54 when we drill extra port holes into the hull i'm going to paint mine(i'm bored with looking at a huge chunk of wood) Also i hear of people lacquering their finished hulls,i will be havig a matt finish with mine,do these aforementioned acrylic paints give a matt finish? Sorry if its a stupid question,i'm completely new to this.

I have painted mine the same colour as the hull (mine is matt finish warm aubergine spray paint). Looking at finished models, they are not only very hard to see, but seem to merge in with the hull paint anyway - cannot see any good reason why they should be a different colour as they are many feet under water anyway! It is advisable to cover the finish the paint job with a clear acrylic spray. This to to strengthen the paint surface, which otherwise is a bit soft and prone to damage. This has to be done on cars so that the paint can stand up to the rigours of the weather and polishing!!! The clear spray can also be obtained in matt, eggshell or full gloss, depending on your preferences!!

I shall be painting mine the same colour as the hull. However, I shall run a bit of black paint in the recessed lines, to represent the black of the pipe/sea chest behind them.

Thanks very much for the replies people.I don't know where a lot of us would be without this forum. The reason i ask is because when i joined HMS Achilles in 1984 she was in the sheds at Devonport for a lengthy refit and if my memory serves me well(which i doubt)the inlets were covered in verdigris. Anyhow red lead it is

Well, by the time that your model has been in the duck pond a few times, yours will also have verdigris on it!!!(and the paintwork will look like your HMS Achilles!) p.s. if anyones paint work is not upto scratch, when commented on state that the model shows wear and tear to be more realistic!!!)

I think the water cooling inlets are really for the static model guys, because they will then be seen. And they would look better brassed. As for us R/C guys, does it matter what they look like.

Well, mine will spend the VAST majority of it's life on dry land on display....where people who appeciate these wonderful models can admire it.....and where their wives can roll their eyes and shake their heads in exasperation!

It's funny I make model boats but I've never ever had the urge to actually sail one. Years ago I built an Caldercraft Milford Star I added 2 channel remote control yet It's never been any where near a pond. and I just dream about being able to do weathering any justice. Oh well never mind. Im happy........

They should be the same colour as the hull to be historically correct.
Not sure on the exact colour of the hull, but bear in mind that the apparent colour will change depending on the light, weather conditions, would have faded in sun a bit (probably), etc. etc.
