Happy 1st. Birthday
Today, I picked up issue 52, my baby Bismarck is now a year old!!!
It only seems like yesterday that I went into our newsagent and the baby arrived without any fuss, weighing less than 200 grams and about 8 inches long. Of course, the baby immediately went into intensive care, and is likely to stay there for another 15 months.
The baby is now a bouncing 2.4kg and is 49 inches long!! It has grown rapidly on a diet of plywood, planking and some bits of brass for a treat, all washed down with copious amounts of wood glue, superglue and acrylic paints!!
We have had our problems, the sleepless nights wondering whether the part fitted was correct or not, the three major operations to correct the fitting of the third propeller, the resiting of the stern anchor recess and the foredeck modification. But we came though it all, and the baby is much the better for it.
We also had lots of nappy rash on its bottom, cured by application of small amounts of filler and gently rubbing down, before curing with a touch of glattfix, primer and top coats to keep out the weather.
The baby is almost ready for its first excursion onto the water, but it is still a bit unsteady on its propellers until I can get its energy source settled in. I should hate for it to sink and land up with a complex for the rest of its life!
Many thanks to Uncle Eric for his kind present, which the baby loves and which we are busy using to enhance its appearance.
Hopefully in the coming year, we can get the baby to wave its guns around, improve its topside and look forward to lots more goodies from the Hachette/Amati family.
Here are some pictures on its first birthday from the proud father:
