Ok, I have now fitted my stern decking to the rest of my decking and that went fine. But at the stern the decking has a slight kink, as seen here: www.subifa.de/heftvorschau/h19_2.jpgNow my problem is that my side extension planking does not have this kink. So what I need to somehow do is acheive this kink in the extended side planking. Now I have just fitted the stern porthole templates and due to the side extension I am going to have to put another plank above the template to make it match in. So what I am thinking is to shape this plank above the portholes to match the kink. I will then sand down the original side extension so it is level with the deck and then use the 4mm decking margin to cover the first side extension and butt up to the plank above the portholes. Hope you get what I mean otherwise I can take some pics to help explain it. Any other ideas greatly welcome.

Afk
Can you take a couple of pictures and post them please.
I'm just not too sure what you mean. If I see the problem, maybe I can offer some help. Maybe others might have alternatives too.

The kink ocurs where the hull "dives in" to the thinner one planked part above the armour plating. Hence, the porthole template has a small wedge shaped piece ahead of it to smoothly blend in this, and this must happen with either the original planking or the extended one. Presume this photo shows the area in question? With mine, i had to add about 3mm plank above the porthole template so as to encompass the removable deck, later sanded down level when the deck properly planked. In Davids model, his side pieces are about 0.5mm lower than the finished deck to represent the scuttle. My extended piece also follows the line and retains the kink.

Yeah i will put up some pics to better get at what I mean. And yes that is the area Swanrail, my problem is that my extended side plank does not have that kink thus I am trying to figure out a way to get the kink without redoing the side extensions.

Afk, I've got some pics of this area with my side extentions fitted prior to painting. I used one long plank on each side right from the stern part up to the foredeck. Hope this helps.

I will have to get some pics up as I don't think your quite getting what I mean. I too have done the side extension and it runs from front to back. But for whatever reason the side extension hasn't got that planking (didn't realise about the kink until way after gluing the extension sigh). So I really don't want to rip off the extension and start again. So I have an idea of what to do but think I better provide some pics to describe it.

Hi AFKMATRIX. As per the original instructions, the first layer of planking went to the top of the ribs, and the deck layed over this. At the stern, the second layer was added by means of the porthole piece, and this blended into the single planks by using a wedge shaped piece. We then had the deck with its kink exactly overlaying the hull. With the modiofication to fit the deck inside the side planks, we firstly reduced the width of the deck by some 1mm on each side, taking care to retain the kink. The central planks were then extended upwards by, in my case, gluing a plank on top of the existing plank, others replaced the orginal plank with one some 5mm wder. This extension only went as far as the forward end of the wedge, at the stern end. Next, the porthole piece was also extended upwards by the same amount, BUT NOT THE INNER PLANK ON WHICH IT IS FITTED. This then leaves a gap at the forward end of the porthole piece and the after end of the mid section piece, and I filled this with a short length of planking.(along the line of the wedge). Looking from above, we now have the top edge of the extension following the line of the deck with its kink, thus allowing the deck to sit down inside the extension. Once the deck has been planked, the top of the extension is then sanded down level with the deck. Is that of any help?

Ok managed to take a few pics so hopefully it will be easier to understand what i am on about. Ok the first 2 pictures are of the deck roughtly sitting on the side extensions. As you can see there is no kink in the side extension. This is a top view of my side extensions: Soo what I am thinking of doing is adding another plank above the portholes like this: And tapering it off to provide the kink here: I would then sand down the side extension that is marked red in the following pic so it is level with the removable deck and thus I can put the decking margin over so that in theory it has the right kink. Here is a diagram to hopefully explain it as well:

A bit hard to tell from your photos Afk, the extention plank ABOVE the stern portholes seems to be inside of the portholes, not flush wih it?
My extention plank was directly in line with the portholes and naturally achieved the 'kink' for the armour, so as your plank is inside of the portholes they are almost completely level with the planking inside the kink.
I guess your choices are either to remove the extention plank and re-attach it flush with the portholes, or, as you suggest to add another plank outside of the existing ones and sand down. I reckon you could sand the existing one DOWN so it was now below the level of the deck and the new plank would now be the only one going above the deck at this point. It could work, but I'm not sure how well it would blend in right at the kink.
I have to say, Afk, that I personally would remove the offending plank and re-attach it flush with the hull above the portholes and along the kink......but others might think differently.
Maybe Don will have the answer! I have every faith that whatever you decide to do, it will work out!

Having seen your latest pictures, then my reply no,7 above pinpoints your problem. YOU HAVE THE EXTENSION INSIDE THE PORTHOLE PIECE!!!!! As I said, this extension must only be glued above the porthole piece NOT inside it!!! Suggest that you cutout the extension above the porthole piece and refit it in the correct place, else it will never work properly!!!

This drawing might explain better: Note that the extension on the mid section is above the first layer, and at the stern above the second layer only!

Ok, I've taken some pics of the 'kink' at the stern as is just now. You can see the top of the first inner layer planking inside of the extended plank and the way my extention follows the line of the kink of the outside of the hull, ignoring the line of the inner planks. Any help Afk?

Hi Guys, I am very greatfull to all of you for helping me and I have bitten the bullet and am going to rip of the side extension and re do it Its actually good in a way as the 5mm high extension I have at the mo doesn't seem high enough. As when I put on the deck it is pretty much level with the extension And I still have to put on the deck planking. So I have ordered today 2 x 8x1mm lime strips and will then be very careful at the stern when I stick them on!!! Thanks again guys
