If they are true vikings they might demand a blood sacrifice before she can be launched......
They look like a bunch that might enjoy a bit of pilaging and burning!

Have your crew got names yet ? They look mighty pleased with their boat. Bet they can't wait to go invading once it's finished The captain is Sweyn Forkbeard (Svend Tveskæg aka Sven the Dane) with his vikings - Harald, Canute, Erik, and Thorkell - getting ready for a trip to England to battle King Ethelred and collect Danegeld. So, UK watch out ;D If they are true vikings they might demand a blood sacrifice before she can be launched...... The blood sacrifice happened on Wednesday - I cut the thumb on my left hand with a scalpel

Hey, I'm in there, but I don't have the beard in real life...... I do actually have some danish blood in me, I guess some ancestor of mine pillaged and burned his way across Scotland and decided to stay! Erik The Red. (Going bald and grey, but still red)

So, UK watch out ;D Too bad you didn't mention Edward The Confessor, Poul. Otherwise I'd have informed William and his armada to sail toward Hastings! ;D Robert

I have had to do some serious modifications on the ship. The way Billing recommended to assemble the ship, made the bow and stern look far too bulky when the carvings were added. I therefore removed the tapered lining from the curved part of the bow and stern and tapered the plywood down to 2mm at the front. That mod took quite a few days, but here are some pics of where I am at with just under a week to finish the ship. It looks far more elegant after the mod. Looking at the port side The front of the ship The aft of the ship. (The ladder/boardwalk - I don't really know exactly what it is - is scratch build since it features on the original ship in the Viking Museum, Oslo)

Whats happening in just under a week. There is still a long list to attend to: 1) The two rows of planks above deck level (the "armour belt") 2) Top planks to be modified to give a nice finish to the planking and drill 30 holes for the oars 3) Trim height of eight frames (too high) 4) Install the arrangement to carry the shields 5) Fit rudder assembly 6) Scratch build the last two frames in bow and stern 7) Attach all the cleats 8) Scratch build two blocks to hold the yard (from top of mast) 9) Paint and sew sail 10) Rigging 11) Make and stain 30 oars and install the two oar racks 12) Spray a finishing coat of satin varnish to protect all wood 13) Plus a couple of things I bet I have forgot about But what about our French model.........so long since an update...Richsomeone I think....... Yeah, Baz ... forgot the name too ;D Took it for a cruise - and it sank two nautical miles SE of Wilson's Prom Just kidding ;D ;D ;D I have taken one month off that build to finish the Oseberg, which is a Birthday present for my son, so she has to be finished by next Wednesday. Then it is back to finish the Frenchie - hopefully by June/July (And just to preempt a certain question: Yes, I mean this year 2009 ;D )

The ship just looked ridiculous with 6 frames left out (a major flaw in the Billing kit), so I decided to put in some false frames. This was made a bit difficult as the deck was already in place. I cut some 0.5mm thin planks on my Proxxon saw, the width of the frames, and cut a shallow groove across the deck with a scalpel and then glued the "frame" in place. The ship looks a lot better now.

I have achieved quite a bit today, so here is a pic of Oseberg nearly completed. There is a contrast between the top planks and the lower planks due to different timber used on the original ship, but I have overdone it by a mile. I will probably darken the top planks a bit on Tuesday (I am babysitter tomorrow ) Still the sail and rigging to be finished

Thanks guys Finished the carvings today. It took a few modifications to make it all fit. First, I added a piece of scrap 1mm ply (tapered) to cover where all the different pieces meet The top part of the back of the carvings (there is also a part across a little lower) had to be added on the outside of the side carvings (according to photos of the original ship) which therefore had to be flush with each other where they join. To make this happen, I had to cut off a corner of one of them (the one to the left) Also, the back top part had to be tapered for the whole top to look nice and smooth Finally the lower part on the back had to be joined into the side carvings (again according to photos of the original ship) So, it all looks nice now, and here is what it looks like all together
