I've posted on this forum a few times but this is to introduce myself. My name is Marc. I'm based in Paris but mainly from North London.
I'm building the Bismark with my little son - 9 years old, at his request after he saw some ads on French TV.
I built a few balsa models when I was about 12 years old but that is the total of my experience. Ruslan, my son thinks that the Bismark is a bit like an Airfix kit and I have already had to talk to him very seriously about what it is, how long it will take and how careful we will have to be. He wants to sail it - and frankly, so do I.
Thanks very much for this site. I have read through it very thoroughly and some of the linked sites. I understand now that I would have made a complete hash of it without all of you guinea-pigs doing it first for me. I may still muck it up anyway!!
We are also cursed with a very small flat, no permanent place to build - and a g/f who is completely against the project because she believes that it will be an eyesore while it is being built.
I was lucky enough to buy some back issues from one of your forum members so we have up to issue 39 already. I am contacting Hachette to join the UK subscription rather than wait for the French one. Apart from anything else, customer service here is very poor. the news agents are completely uninterested. I couldn't even order a weekly issue - even when I offered to pay a year in advance!! I would have to take my chances every week and hope that I got there in time before they magazine was sold to someone else.
I also am confident that if I subscribe with UK Hachette and they cause any problems, that I can take any necessary action to oblige them to provide me with what they have promised. I'm sad that I have to think defensively about the project already but I have been reading about quite a few problems with them in various countries.
Anyone got any more back issues available.
I saw in a linked site, one Bismark builder using a movable workstand which allowed the hull to be rolled over as needed. I can't find the link now. Mark commented that he wished that he had thought of that idea. Could someone link to that site please as it was a good idea and although I could make a rough copy myself, I would like to have another look.
Anyway, that's the initial intro. I am pretty sure that I shall be a net beneficiary rather than a net contributor to this forum but I sense that you are pretty welcoming bunch anyway.
Ciao
