Just started second planking with my new long planks, Don was right, you have to be VERY quick!
I predrilled all the piliot holes for my planking clamps, and even had the clamps assembled and lined up ready to be picked up and screwed in immediatly.
Works fine, but have only done one plank per side so far, the main problem was to get that first plank lined up correctly along the edge of the armoured belt line. After this one, it should be easier and quicker with the positioning of the rest of them.
Eric.

Gluing the long planks - I also use the evostick external glue and a flat, chisel end, nylon 1/8 inch brush, which allows the strips to be glued on the full width with 1 brush stroke. It takes me about a minute to apply the glue along the length and the glue remains sufficiently "tacky" to fit the plank in place along its length and then apply my clamps to hold everything in place while it sets fully. The only problem I have is when the phone rings halfway through the process!!! The lesson is that once you start you must work to completion without any distractions and have everything you need immediately to hand. Quite right about that first plank, it is the key to getting all the others in place, again because I have become quite adept in gluing up the strips quickly I had more than enough tome to slide it slightly to line up perfectly with the "step" before the glue had set. I also tend to be fairly generous with the glue so that it remains viscous for a few minutes along final positioning (and then cleaning off the excess!)

I found out that to add a little glue as I have lost three planking clamps due to the glue running onto the clamp

Hey mattyb, what glue are you using.....CA?
I've gone 9 planks down to the bilge keel level, I think that the destructions are wanting you to go to there rwclancer.

Hey Matt
Sorry to hear about the troubles your having with the clamps.
Just to let others know that I have never planked in my life before (errr that sounds a bit umm naughty).
I am getting on fine with tiny brass model nails.
I simply mark up where the ribs are on the plank then remove the plank place onto a flat surface and push the nail in where it is marked with a pair of pliers.
Then simply glue on the back side of the plank (where the nails are sticking out) push the nails back out, line the plank up then gently hammer the nails into the rib, easy as that.
I then let the glue dry and then remove the nails with a pair ot pliers (not had one hard to remove yet)

I used that method on the first layer of planking. But fancied the clamps for the second layer.

I suppose it would be just as easy to place a plastic topped tac under the leading edge of the plank and hold it in place. I might send an email to the model place saying hey Im not happy Jan

any chance you could post a photo of what's happening Matt?
Perhaps for now you might switch to using pins for the first layer, the holes in the planks do not matter for the first layer.
