It comes as no great surprise ;D Wood will simply soak up the extra water content in the glue, the amount that is applied when applying the gauze will no doubt make the wood expand and give all sorts of problems The Gauze & PVA method is frought with disaster both in its application and the fact that the mag does not advise the use of a waterproof PVA to apply it so there will not be any water seal either, that is if this is what this method is intended, also if the gauze in not correctly applied as per the wonderful photos then it becomes a pointless excercise Or could it be there method is simply intended as a adding strength to the inner hull which seems to be the likely scenario Its standard practice to use resin and a light weight fibreglass tissue for a hull inner, seing as we are being asked to provide all the stuff to finish this model then why dont they simply advise the best method? Have a look at Martins posting on the Mayhem build he has problems in its application too

Just read step 1 from issue 18, the method is described as "sealing the hull with caulk", no mention of it being for strengthening purposes In which case there is a potential disater here for many as the mag does not note the use of a waterproof PVA for the application of the Gauze Any who dont use a waterproof PVA could well have masssive problems later when it is in use

The resin method is standard practice I like the sound of the Graupner Glattfix stuff Marki used as it is simply painted on and can be used for both the inner and outer hull prior to painting, it has to be the way to go for simplicity but sadly it seems this stuff not available in the UK My guess is that Amati are also hoping that the exterior paint will stop leaks into the hull, fine as long as it dont get chipped and not so sure about its longevity.

I have to admit, I'm starting to strongly look at this project as a static model rather than try for an R/C fit. If the amount of detail shown in the photo's is correct, it will be worth putting in a glass case than risk damaging it everytime you transport it to the water, lift the decking off, recharge the batterries etc.. I have a 1/200 sovremenny that has copped a battering over 12 months and I'm forever trying to patch up the railings and little bits of detailing that accidently get knocked, no matter how careful I am.
Although the thought of having both boats in the water facing off at each other is tempting...

When one looks at the cost of evrything connected with r/c, I feel it would better to spend part of that extra cost on enhancing the visual appearance of the model, which I am sure can be done!

Exactly my thinking too napoleon. What with the rc kit costing $299au here I am giving rc a miss as I can get a really nice display case complete with cupboards made up for the same price of the Rc kit. Trev

You wont have all the hassle of having to seal the hull against water ingress either

Hey guys!! I was trawling through Google today to get these clamps for the hull (found them at miskinmodels) when i went onto www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/index.html and found the Gattfix that Markus has been telling us about, so I fell over myself to get me some! So now I shall hopefully have a watertight hull YIPPEE!!!
