Hachette do not seem to specify which way the top crosstree faces. I assume as the arms are angled slightly the angle faces to the bow. any thoughts on this?

According to the Anatomy book,. the top cross tree is in front of the mast and square to it both fore and aft as well as side to side. Note that on top of the crosstree (ie in front of the mast) there will be an aerial to fit. (page 97 of the book clarifies). for those thinking of putting on navigation lights, note that there are mast lights just below the brass piece 7.5mm down from the top. The wiring would need to run down inside the mast tube as well as through the wood dowel at the bottom. Note on the mast: the fiddly bits ar really fiddly, the worst yet! I left part 506 in situ whilst gluing 507/8, even then, very hard, worst yet! When I came to fit part 505 to the mast, I found that the centre hole was oversize, and superglue would not hold it, so had to resort to the soldering iron. Even then, very difficult due to the large amount of metal taking the heat away!(and trying to keep square in both directions). Note that with this part the wheel (actually a hand winch) is on the aft side of the mast.

You could use the mast itself as 1 of the wires and solder a wire to the bottom of it. I'll have to think about just how to do this.

The lower platform is a searchlight station (see above drawing) yet in issue 71 Hachette state the mast is complete and recommend painting. will they supply a searchlight at a later date I wonder.

after reading the magazine on the german site, my guess is they will supply it later when all the plastic bits (searchlights, some smaller deck fittings, lifeboats, and maybe stairs) arrive. they're not actually recommending painting it, they're saying to spray it with a light to medium grey primer.
although I thought primers should be matched to the top paint layer, how will we know what type of paint we will use? the paint might even dissolve the primer!

I thought primers should be matched to the top paint layer It need only be a rough match. E.g. White for a light colour, grey for a darker colour (or grey !) or red for a red/brown coloured top coat. how will we know what type of paint we will use? the paint might even dissolve the primer! You should have an idea of what sort of paint you're going to use for a top coat, and choose a primer that is suitable. However, I'm going to use Halfords car primer (Halfords is a chain of car accessory stores in the UK that sell all sorts of accessories, tools, spares, paints, etc.) Their primer is acrylic and seems to take most model paints without any problems. I've never had it react with anything (although I wouldn't like to try a cellulose paint on it !). It also sticks to brass remarkably well (at least it did on my Titanic.)

On my FW190D9 I've used warbirdcolors paint, and that paint could only be used with warbirdcolors primer... some people used other primer and they could just peel the paint off with a normal piece of tape... I remember finding a german shop who sold the right paint a year ago and posting it here on the forum, but now I see the thread is gone I believe the thread was called "you're going to like this..." but I'm not sure... the shop sold paint that was completely matched to the original colours of the german navy...
