Front and rear decks are complete and sanded with coarse sandpaper (still about 1/10mm to go with fine sanding). Front deck: 252 deck planks ;D Rear deck: 112 deck planks ;D (Main deck: only 88 deck planks so far) The main problem with the front deck was, that the 80 deg. tapered front with the breakwater tends to squeeze the deck planks together, while the circular margin plank around the forward main turret tends to force them away from each other. So if not careful, the whole front section could end up tapered. But thanks to Swanrail's recommendation to pencil in help lines, I think that I managed OK. Below is a pic of the front deck: Another problem was to plank around the forward main turret and make sure that when finished the planks would meet exactly so I could continue with full length planks. One side was almost 2/10mm out but, as you can see in the pic below, hardly noticeable : Finally a pic of the rear deck, also coarsedly sanded only: (The decks will not be glued in place for a while until the hull is painted). It's funny, but when you have planked a certain deck for almost 3 weeks constantly looking forward to the finish line, instead of being pleased when complete it is actually a bit of an anticlimax. Well, I've still got the main deck to "look forward to"

Wow that looks awesome mate!!
Quick question, how did you bend the margin planks for the turrets as i'm going to have to do the same for my decks. Thinking of getting a plank bender.

No bending. The only bending I did was the margin planks along the waterwas. For the turrets, I used a circular cutter not much unlike the one Swanrail shows in his thread about deck planking (cheap plastic one for cutting paper), first cutting the outer diameter then the inner diameter. Just be careful, 1mm veneer is fragile stuff plus the cutter tends to "run" (move a bit) if you press too hard - use many gentle strokes. The complete circular margin plank (forward turret) was actually cut a fraction too narrow and split/broke, but I found that it was easily repaired with a small piece of veneer inserted where it broke, enlarging the circle a bit at the same time to a perfect fit. BTW, the offcut from the middle now makes an excellent coaster for my coffee mug ;D

Hats off Powl, Thats a beautiful deck. Regarding your sense of anticlimatix at completing it, having just completed my own foredeck, I understand completely. I discovered early on with my planking efforts that it is a quietly addictive process (don't tell the authorities), a sort of one-pointed meditation to get a bit flowery about it. Keep going Powl, we're depending upon you! David

Thanks for that info poulw. I have read Swanrails cutting method for the sheet of lime but just thought you may have done it differently. I have also managed to buy at lunch my circle cutter!!! Just gotta stick down my modded foredeck (glattfixed the inside under it this weekend, wow does it stink, and now ready to fit the deck, breakwater etc) then I can start to do a bit of planking.

The end of my deck planking is in sight. ;D Done 331 planks now on the main deck with around 100 to go, so I should finish off on the weekend with pics to follow. The tricky part now will be the planks along the waterways where they are almost, but not quite, parallel to the margin planks. Gotta figure that one out though Maybe I'll try to cut out some joints in the margin planks All up around 800 planks for the three decks.

After exactly one month of deck planking (and 800 planks later), my three decks are finally finished. Sanding of the main deck will have to wait for a week or so.

No, I decided to pass on the Bismarck Bought the first two issues to have a look at it and found this forum, but after some pros and cons discussions decided to stay with my Richelieu (I think the discussion is still in the thread "Aussie Hull Build Thread"). But, encouraged by Mark - and the promise of some dancing girls - I stayed in the forum to maintain this thread ;D

I've spent the last couples of days figuring out how to go about building the fences on the superstructure, in a way so they can be painted separated from the platforms (different colours), on which they are supposed to be mounted. So I will try to assemble them, spot glued to card copies of the platforms (easy to remove after painting). Here is my first attempt on the front top platform fence made up from brass and styrene: Still to go on the front lamellae, is the outer (0.5x1.5mm styrene) fence enforcement. And this is with the 380mm rangefinder dry fitted on the platform it goes around: I think this strategy is going to work.

hi poulw i have decided to follow you on this project & have a go at scratch building , have followed your thread and printed of the plans and started to trace of the ribs from the breadth plan to do the model in 1:100 as i have no way to reduce the plans , this also makes the detail a bit easier as not to small,'hopefully' but any advice will be gratefully excepted, your build looking really great .
