Saturday was absolutely miserable up here so it was well timed when my Bismarck issues 79~83 dropped through the letterbox. Unfortunately, 4hrs later they were done and I am back staring at the big box in the corner marked ‘don’t open till you have finished the Bissy’
As the rain battered off the window I thought what the hell, lets open just one issue…. Ok, so I am a man of little willpower….
For those new to forum, this is the complete Hachette partwork which I bought a few months ago from ebay. I am sure Mark will back me up here when I say what a massive leap forward the Bissy partwork is in comparison with this model. The quality of the timber, accuracy of the parts and instructions are all far superior with the Bissy. Particularly disappointing is the card motifs for finishing the cabin walls etc. I looked into buying photo etched parts but the cost was prohibitive. In saying that, I am still looking forward to building the kit and hopefully it will look ok when finished. All said it only cost me £150 which was a bit of a bargain..
I apologise in advance for this build diary as I am sure some of you (not least our host) have been here before and I will stop posting updates if there is enough complaints!
Here they are in all their glory..
Took a lot of advise from Marks 'Build the Titanic' web site and decided to build the keel in one piece.
Next was another idea stolen from mark which was to build a jig to keep the keel straight.
As mentioned - some of the laser cut parts don't fit to well and needed some adjustment
The ply had dried out and warped slightly over the years so it took some coaxing with clamps to keep it all square.
On with the decking
Disaster.. The decking in a couple of the issues had completely fell to bits. Believe it or not, I managed to glue it all back together.
That's as far as I am going with the decking. Its the planking next.
