Hi all, Well my Grandad started building the bismarck and got to about episode 45 but sadly passed away. So I decided to take on the task of finishing the bismarck in his memory. I'm up to around episode 60 at this stage and just ordered the remote control from hatchette partworks. Now my problem is water proofing and painting, I have ZERO knowledge with models, so can i please tell you what I'm thinking of buying and let me know if it will do the job for me? I want to paint it as drawing 3 or 4 on the following page (without the swastika haha) www.kbismarck.com/drawings.htmlSo I think i need Resin = cgi.ebay.co.uk/ALIPHATIC-RESIN-WOOD-GLUE-model-boat-craft-kit-turning_W0QQitemZ360141869365QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_ModelKits_ModelKits_JN?hash=item360141869365&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318Is there better stuff out there? Any UK names I would be able to get aswell, I read on here ronseal wood hardener, whats the best and any links to ebay/online shops Now onto colours.. I think I need Light Grey Grey Dark Grey Redbrown --> For the part under the water Black Teak ---> on the floor part looking down on the boat But does anyone know where I can get all these colours from one place online, ebay shop or model shop (I'm from Ireland so some shops might not deliver) ... And how much do I need? Should it be enamel, matt, water proof or just model paint, or normal paint. Sorry for being so stupid but I don't want to do this wrong. Also should I coat the outside with the resin/waterproof stuff... one layer? Then sand it. Then a primer (what is a primer? Any links?) Then sand it, then the proper colours go on next and should I leave it at that or sand it and clear varnish it? Thank you in advance to anyone who takes time to read this and help. I really appriciate it. Thanks, Paul

Firstly welcome aboard Paul and glad to hear you are going to finish the model in your Grandads memory..
I will let the more experienced amongst the forum answer your question. However, I am also interested in the final paint colours. Wolfie recently recommended the Tamiya TS range of spray paints and listed the following colours:
TS33 (Dull Red) - Below the waterline TS32 (Haze Grey) - Above the waterline TS48 (Gunship Grey) - Waterline TS67 (IJN Gray) - Bow and Stern above the waterline TS27 (Matt White) TS81 (Royal Light Grey) for the Superstructure.
Last night I thought I would shop around for the best deals on these paints but could not find them in any online shop. I have since been advised by Wonderland models that Tamiya have withdrawn these paints due to a labelling issue and they won’t be available until next year!
Hopefully some of the guys can recommend alternatives as I don’t fancy air brushing.
Apologies if this is hijacking your thread,

Hi Paul,
Sorry to hear that your Grandfather passed away.
Firstly, do you know what glue was used to complete the planking. Hopefully it was a waterproof glue of some sort ? The resin you mention is actually a water proof glue, and a good one at that. I don't know if you could thin it with water and paint on a layer to waterproof it. Perhaps somebody else can advise.
You could paint on a couple of layers of sanding sealer. Sand back between each layer and re-apply. Repeat until you get to a stage where a light sanding gives you a smooth, blemish free finish. Sanding sealer is available from model shops.
Now prime the model with a primer paint. I find Halfords white car paint very good. It's an acrylic paint that sticks very well. I would put a gloss paint on top for colour, mainly because matt paints don't always seem to be 100% waterproof. Hope that helps

Welcome Paul, Sorry to hear the way that you ended up building the Bismarck.
If you go to (page 1) of the "Popeye's build" on the "Build Diarys" page and then click on the link to my Flickr photo page you will see my photo record and comments on building the Bismarck. The set for "Bismarck at 3 July 08" shows how I fibreglassed and resined the hull and then painted it and finally applied 3 layers of Yacht Varnish. I used the Halfords (they are a do-it-yourself car parts provider) grey primer (the one for use on a resin base) over the resin. I also use their grey primer (the one for use on metal surfaces) to paint the brasswork before overpainting with the light grey superstructure paint (similar to Gordon's recommendation, above). This properly sticks to the brass (it probably etches itself on) and prevents flaking of the paint with handling.
To waterproof the inside of the boat, I used a light resin which can be painted on and sets in about 20 to 30 minutes (as the model shop people, either your local shop or one on the web - e.g. do an internet search for Cornwall Model Boats, Euromodels or Model Dockyard, Cornwall are very good for advice if you live in the UK). BUT don't do the inside until you have fitted all the permanent items (e.g. motors, gearbox, shafts, etc.) and decided where and how you are going to fit in the other bits and pieces (e,g, batteries, radio control, etc.). This is so that you can properly glue the wooden and plastic fittings onto the inside wood of the hull.
You can also find more details about painting on this site by searching on the word "paint", if you do then set the search parameters to just look in the "Building the Model" set, select to look at, say, 100 postings and set the search area to, say, 365 days as a lot has been posted over the last year on this subject.
I hope this helps regards Popeye

perhaps a bit late, but I've done some paint research yesterday, and it seems that the needed RAL colours are as follows:
RAL8013 or Ral 8011 underwater ( RAL 8013 is probably the most correct colour, but it has been removed from the RAL colour chart, so I don't know if it is still available)
RAL 7024 Dark grey on bow, Stern, and cannon tops RAL 7000 Light grey on hull
RAL 7001 Light grey on superstructure
RAL 9005 or RAL 7016 Camouflage striping ( either deep-black or anthracite, don't know which one is more correct...)
RAL 9010 Camouflage striping Bright-white
the third colourscheme on that page resembles our model the best, since the previous schemes feature the Bismarck without aft AA-guns and incomplete rangefinders, and the later schemes had small items ( like the bow anchor) removed. The third one has all items also found on our model.
The advantage of using RAL colours is that you can use paint from pretty much any manufacturer and still have the correct colour, since all RAL colours are mixed from the same chart. I recommend using a Polyurethane based paint, since those are usually waterproof. I don't know if those come as matte paints though...
I'd recommend coating the hull in sanding sealer, then sanding, coating again, sanding again, and another coat. then you can spray it with a primer.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAL_(color_space_system)This Wiki entry explains RAL paint codes. It's not commonly referred to in the UK, at least, not with model paints anyway, so you'll have to find an equivalent. See above and some of the other threads about paint colours
