I seem to have a problem that rears its head sometimes with the masking tape I use. It leaves behind a sticky residue in some places from the sticky on the tape. Has anyone ever found a suitable solvent that gets the stickiness off without damaging the paint on the boat? I've just done a nice waterline on the hull and on the red part there are patches of stickiness from the tape. really annoying and it picks up dirt over time.. Any suggestions?
thanks

i scraped the residue off with a sharp knife
this resulted in some claw marks, but they all disappeared with some coats of clear paint

Meths seems to work as well. As Rush said, don't rub too hard, and also wait a good while for the paint to go off - at least a week !!

Thanks all for the help. My experience is thus:
Tried methylated spirits - didn't seem to get much off but after some furious rubbing, seemed to lessen the stickiness a little bit, but not remove it entirely.
Tried Vinegar - didn't work at all.. ( just had a thought it might, that's all..)
Tried Eucalyptus Oil - WOW!! - rubbed the stickiness, the paint and the primer and everything else right off in one foul swoop. God damn powerful stuff - won't use that again unless I want to repaint the entire thing. Now I know why Koala's are so damn sleepy, they eat that stuff all day..
Tried white spirits - similar result to metho.
So after all that I'll keep on with the metho and keep rubbing away and then when the stickiness is down to a mild fly paper stickiness, try a repaint.
cheers

Hi Rod. You might want to try a different type of Tape. I usually use Tamiya Tape which can be found at any good Hobby Store. It has a low tack and comes in about four widths. I see you live in Brisbane so try hobbyone or Hobbyrama. If you live near Ipswich, try Voglers...Cheers Mark
