I think the first one of the two would be better, but it's not cheap !! I use an old halogen uplighter I got from Argos years ago. It throws the light onto the ceiling, which disperses round the room nicely to give a nice even light. This looks to be similar www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002201&langId=-1&searchTerms=4308052That combined with the normal room light, and you don't get too many shadows. The down side is that it's not a daylight lamp, so it's not so good if you're trying to paint figures or something where you have to mix paints.
