I want to give the deck a smooth finish before I glue the wooden parts given in week 48. However, being stuck in the back of beyond, sanding sealer is about as common as rocking horse poo. Can anybody suggest an alternative. I want to fill the grain and give a perfectly smooth finish. Maybe flour, white glue and water ?

Mark,
Maybe do as Mike B has suggested (in a post somewhere):
1) take a piece of scrap timber (same timber as the deck) 2) put it against a drum sander or similar to create sawdust 3) mix 50/50 water/white glue with the sawdust into a paste 4) use it as filler/sealer over your deck
However, using white glue, you know that you still have to sand the deck afterwards.

I think you answered your own question, Mark. Rocking horse poo sounds like it could be perfect for the job ;D

Using the PVA diluted (try 50%) on your deck and then sanding should give the finish desired as an alternative to sanding sealer. As usual, try it on some scrap first to get it right. buildthebismark.proboards52.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=1199316495
