One of the great controversies, which has been discussed ad nauseum in plasrtic modelling circles is what type of aerial recognition marks the bismarck carried at various times in her career.
The Kreigsmarine had different colours for turret tops as aerial recognition marks. For example in the Baltic, turret tops were painted a dark crimson colour, supposedly in the atlantic a yellow colour and during the Scharnhorst Gneisenau channel dash a blue colour.
Pictures of the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen enroute to Grimstadt Fjord show them with the turret tops painted a dark colour, always thought to be a dark grey. Some models and artworks have depicted the Bismarck with yellow turret tops.
Does anyone have any conclusive information on what markings the Bismarck carried, also whether deck swastikas were covered or overpainted?
Would anyone car to discuss?

No & Both!
There are indications that the turret tops were painted but no conclusive eveidence but it is HIGHLY likely & the swastikas were, to begin with, covered with a tarp but later over painted (probably grey) but could still be made out. Don't forget that most if not all the pictures taken of her was done covertly so it still remains a moot point as to exactly what was done.

Regarding Bismarck's colour schemes and her colours on the turret tops, go to www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/bismarck_menu.html2/3 down the list you will find the section "Paint Schemes". There you can see all the different colour schemes used during her short but action filled lifetime. There is no indication that the turret tops were ever painted other colours than grey in different light and dark shades. In the above link you can also find letters from survivors discussing this subject. Cheers .... Poul
