Yep, I saw that matt, looks very good!
I eventually decided to put on the other optional part instead. it would have been nice if they had been clearer with the instructions!

I also fitted the optional section and assumed it was downward to help walking along. I used some 3mm brass rod to make the upper part of the mast rather than wood and it has worked very well. I will post pictures on my Flickr site shortly.
I am concerned about the large 45 degree angled section at the top of the mast. This is totally unsupported at present. I put a small spot of araldite at the point where the brass is bent the strengthen it. In some of the drawings I found on the internet there appears to be a line connecting the ends of the "hanging" part (near where the wind detectors are) to the mast. In reality, a large frame like that would not be unsupported at the top as the heaving of the ship in a heavy sea would put an intolerable strain on the joint to the mast. If nothing appears by the last issue (especially given the way Hachette suddenly resurrect sections to have something added on at a later stage), then I will provide the additional support, probably with some 1mm brass wire.

My guess (and it really is a guess) is that this will be added when the rest of the rigging is done.

just drilling the holes in the 3 yardarm pieces and discovered I don't have a .5mm drill bit, can I use a 1mm drill , glue them in and fill in any holes?

Rem,
you should be ok in the middle of the yardarm but there wont be much left at the end of the taper and it could split. No harm in trying providing you have some spare doweling.

I'll think I'll have a go with 1mm, as the destructions say to do the tapering after the drilling
