Now that the Chinese Junk is finally finished, its time to take a look at my next project. My wife bought me this kit some time ago but I had to discipline myself to finish the Junk before I opened the box. This kit looks really impressive with a 58 page instruction manual, a 28 page parts guide and 6 sheets of full size plans. A far cry from the meagre instructions I got with the Amati kit! Quality of the parts is also excellent with some fine detail. The ply and walnut parts are CNC cut as apposed to the laser cut that you get with the Bismarck. Only real complaint with this is that the 5mm Ply parts need to be removed from the frame with a saw and in some places the cutter has not went right through the ply. This means some dressing of the part before fitting but this is no big deal. This looks like a real challenge for me, particularly as this is only my second build. I tend to build less in the summer months so this is likely to take some time. Will keep you posted on the progress. i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd170/Gordon4499/Schooner Pickle/025.jpg[/img] i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd170/Gordon4499/Schooner Pickle/010-2.jpg[/img] i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd170/Gordon4499/Schooner Pickle/005-2.jpg[/img] i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd170/Gordon4499/Schooner Pickle/006-2.jpg[/img] i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd170/Gordon4499/Schooner Pickle/001-1.jpg[/img]

Good luck with your build Gordon. Jotika make some excellant kits as you have found, I built their Granado. Only complaint really was that the CNC cut parts are not as good as laser cut ones, where they had recessed, there were serious alignment problems and quite a few parts I had to rebuild as scratch items. else instructions and plans are brilliant!!!!

Would agree Swanrail, I much prefer the laser cut parts. I have started the kit and, so far, all the bulkheads are fitting ok. In you experience what kit manufacturer delivers on quality of parts and instructions?

Funny enough, I have tried to avoid kits in the past, using mostly Billing ones which are basic but very good to learn building skills on, as they handle well with good quality wood. I much prefer scratch building as this is moe satisfying, landing up with a model which is unique and needs a lot of research which I find the best bit. This is why with my Titanic/Victory/Bismarck builds, I am always trying to find ways of improving and making my models more personal. It also gives me a chance to try out new techniques, some of which work and some do not, and in the case of the Bismarck lets me warn others of pitfalls and problems which could arise!!!!! So my poor old model is taking a bit of a battering at the moment, being a guinea pig!!! ;D Suggest your best way of finding out what suits you is to go to a model shop and ask them to open up the boxes of various makes for you to see. My nearest one, near Bournemouth, often has make up models on display as well, which helps!!

Swanrail,
Its to early in my modeling career for scratch building!! I am 100 miles + from a decent model shop so I rely on mail order but I may give one of the Billing kits a go the next time.

That looks like a fine kit Gordon, was the Pickle the ship that brought the news of the battle Trafalgar and Nelsons death back home?

Shane, Thanks for your comments and yes all in English and fantastic detail. Its not, however, representative of all the JoTika kits! Some of their older kits are a little sparse in the instruction department. I know this as I also purchased another Jotika kit called HM Yacht Chatham. Lovely kit but nothing like the Pickle. In saying that, its still a massive improvement from my first project which was the Amati Chinese Junk. They shouldn’t have bothered with any instructions as I could have achieved the same result looking at the photo on the box!!
