Nice going, SkyFire.
I got an Amati Bluenose kit cheapish, but haven't started building. Opened the box, though.

That second layer looks nice.....is it waltnut? Yes it's walnut and is going on fairly easily. Nice going, SkyFire. I got an Amati Bluenose kit cheapish, but haven't started building. Opened the box, though. NM Be warned there is an error on the plans - part 16 should be part 17 part 17 should be part 16

I have finally completed the 2nd layer planking on the Bluenose. I just need to do a bit of trimming round the bow and plank the stern piece, (optional in the build). More Hints: F clamps are very useful when planking, but make sure to line them up on the frames. Also add some scrap wood to the bulkheads to thicken them up, so as to make the planking easier. Now onto the photos.

Tips for the Bluenose: Part 15 is Part 17 Part 16 is Part 18 F clamps are very useful when planking, but make sure to line them up on the frames or you may destroy your planking. Add some scrap wood to the bulkheads to thicken them up, so as to make the planking easier, (more wood for pins to go into). Filling the space bewteen the bulkheads with balsa and sanding down can make the planking a lot easier. Planking to the bottom of the keel is optional, ( I chose to plank to the bottom because I thought it looked better that way.) More may come later on, when I think of them.

Ok F Clamps, You can see what they look like in the photos. They have a section that slides along a bar to adjust the length to what you want and then you squeeze the trigger to tighten them up. They very rarely slip, (Had it happen once or twice). Now as to planking on the Bluenose, near the stern of the bluenose where the curve is, some of the planks won't sit flat, (or they didn't on my build anyway). I was able to get them to sit flat with an F clamp. placed as in the 3rd picture. Just makes sure to line it up on a bulkhead, unless you have filled the space between with balsa. Some sections of the hull you will have to rely on fingers being the clamp as you won't be able to use an F Clamp due to the curve of the hull, rubber bands might work, not sure on them though. Hope this all helps.

Ah, so that's what an F clamp is ! I've got a couple and they are really useful. You can put the fixed clamp on the other end with some of them, so it makes a spreader, rather than a clamp.
Be careful - they can exert a lot of pressure. Worth putting a scrap of wood on top of a delicate surface to avoid marking the surface.

Yep, I've got some too, six of 'em in three different sizes. They are very useful indeed.
