Just had an unexpected problem with some masking tape. I masked up a few bits of model to spray (not the Bismarck - doing a quick Gundam as I fancied a quick plastic kit as an intermission) and sprayed away. The masking tape, which was a cheapy, has been sitting on the shelf for about 12 months. When I came to peel it off, it left all the bloody glue behind on the model Moral of the story, if you have old masking tape, check that it still peels off OK before putting it on a model !! Solution ? I'm going to leave the paint a few days to harden off properly, then try to clean the glue off with either nail varnish remover, or sticky label remover. Whichever doesn't harm the surface of the plastic. (Time to do a test on a piece of scrap first !!)

I'm going to experiment on my Tamiya model of HMS Prince of Wales, I might spash out on some model masking tape for this.

On paint I would first try kerosene to remove the glue. It is more gentle to paint than other solvents.
You can also try alcohol - and it doesn't have to be 12 y old single malt ;D

Cheers Robert!
I'll be buying some for sure.
It may be a little more expensive that normal masking tape, but worth it to avoid the greif!

Just purchased some masking tape (Tamiya width 10 mm) Its an orange colour. I purchased mine from Models in motion. They also sold a very good file for the brass parts. The tape was a little bit on the expensive side (3.75) but if it is as good as rem2007 says then It will be well worth it. The file was about £4.45 Matt

If it's the Tamiya (or similar) diamond file, then it is worth it. Works brilliantly.

white spirit does not damage plastic. I have used it before to remove masking tape adhesive.

Thanks guys. All sorted now. The sticky label remover worked just fine. I just needed to use a bit of Tamiya polish to bring the shine back to the plastic. I'll post some photos of the finished model in a couple of weeks. I'm away for a couple of weeks and will only have occasional Internet access
