Last night a replica of a VOC ( Verenigde Oost-indische Compagnie, or United east-indies trading company), "Prins Willem'was completely destroyed in a fire. the fire broke out in a room normally used for hosting parties. Firemen couldn't get inside due to the massive heat, and were left no choice but to leave the ship to burn down. Sad to see an icon of naval history destroyed like that, even though it's only a replica... some pictures ( hotlinking prohibited): www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artikelen/2009/7/30/300709_vocreplica.htmlwww.nu.nl/algemeen/2051136/brand-verwoest-replica-voc-schip.htmland here's what the ship looked like before the fire:

Any news about how the fire started. From the photos, I've seen the hull looks mostly intact, so any chance of rebuilding her.

the cause was most likely a shortcircuit in the kitchen...
the reason the hull is still intact is that this replica has a steel hull whereas the original didn't...
it's still unclear if the ship will be rebuilt. the ship was insured for 3 million euro's, but this isn't enough to fund the reconstruction. the owner is now trying sort something out with the insurance company...
