Hey that's cool Mike.
I was lucky enough to go on board the USS Bowfin at Pearl Harbour many years ago, in fact before they had digital cameras and I snapped a few good shots which I finally managed to find last night. It seems strange looking at photo's on paper nowadays....
The insides were not too bad, but the kitchen and the crew mess... wow - that's kind of cramped..
I think from all my research so far, this boat can only be USS Cobia. Revell seem to have done their research using USS Cobia at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, right down to the colour scheme they've used there to restore her. All the other boats have a myriad of tiny vents along the hull which I have no interest in trying to copy and making a mess of a perfectly good piece of plastic. So USS Cobia it is..
cheers
Rod

Here's an update - I've spent most of my time painting the hull. Not much else to do until the photo etch arrives. It was actually a pretty relaxing paint job, just a little filling to do at some seams but this is the hull pretty much done. cheers Rod

That's about the3 price it goes for Skyfire in most of the stores I visit. I got it on special for $10 cheaper With the amount of paint its soaking up, I need to get every saving I can. I've been focusing on the conning tower. I finally received my photo etch and crew so its been full steam ahead. I have to admit, this build is really enjoyable. The kit is really first class and the photo etch is going to top it off, but to be honest, it doesn't need photo etch. Here's some happy snaps. The skipper and XO are just looking the boat over. Still got a bit of filling and sanding to do on the conning tower and lots more railing and periscope, but its coming along. Best thing bout closeups is I can see the imperfections far easier. Next project will be the guns. Really looking forward to those as the photo etch is going to make it a little model all to itself. cheers Rod

Well its been a really therapeutic weekend. Therapy for waiting for my next Bismarck issues. I've almost finished the conning tower and teh guns. The guns are little models in their own right and it took me most of the weekend to get them done. The photo etch helps but this kit out of the box is really detailed enough to make a pretty good replica. i think i'll probably be leaving about 50% of the photo etch on the sprue. Here is the whole conning tower as it stands at the moment. These guns were pretty fiddly, but came out ok in the end. There were some photo etch bits I didn't use as I found they didn't seem to be any better than the plastic out of the box. All up I'm really happy with this kit. Revell have really made a great replica here. I'm tempted now to do the german u boat as well. cheers Rod

The wife said What do you want another ship for , where are youu going to put it, These females dont understand do they. mike Hey Mike, now that's just weird. Mine said the same thing. Do you think there is something in their genetic makeup that makes them say things like that? In fact when SWMBO saw the size of the gato, her eyes almost popped out of her head. I find the length of rant increases exponentially based on length of model boat... Conversation went something like this: "When did you buy that?" "Oh, ahem, cough - what..that..? well, um, the other day.." smile meekly. "How much did it cost?" "Oh not much, I bought it using my share dividend money" Deftly avoided that question.... "Where are you going to put it?" "Dunno haven't thought about that yet" "well don't you think you should?, you're always buying these things and the house is full of them" Red flag pops up - argument alert!!! "I um, think I er might find a place for it in the office?" "OFFICE!!!!. rant rant rant...." My mind tunes out waiting for next vacant spot in conversation.. I haven't told her I have to go searching for some plastic and wood to make a case for it - wait till she see's the size of that... Rod
