Ive just completed the first layer of planks and have started sanding but not too sure how much too sand or how smooth the hull has to be at this stage. Also do the small gaps need filling at this stage? Im sure this has been asked before but thanks.

Hi frogy I gave the first layer a very light sanding just to remove any glue that might have come out of the joints, I didnt fill at this stage. I only used filler after second layer of planks . Then comes a lot of filling and sanding . mike

You should aim to get it smooth. As Sky says, the smoother the finish, the easier it is to do the second layer planks. You dont want any planks proud, or recessed. I didn't fill the first layer. I'd only fill if you have any planks badly recessed. If you do use any filler, use plastic wood which white glue should stick to. (Test it to make sure). If you use car body filler, glue the second layer planks with superglue over the area, as white glue won't stick to the filler.
