Hi peeps. Noob here.
I have been building plastic kits for years, mainly cars, planes and star wars stuff but I was at a mate's house the other day and saw his planked up Bismarck. I was so impressed I bought the company.... I wish. Anyways I went onto eBay to see if I could find a wooden ship to build and on the first page was an auction for issues 1-31 of the Bismarck with a 'buy it now' of £80. Too good a bargain to pass up so I snapped it up.
Hatchett are letting me subscribe from issue 32 and sending me the issues to bring me up to date so all is looking good so far. I received the eBay lot yesterday afternoon and started it at 4.30pm with the aid of a nice bottle of white ;D So far I am up to issue 16 and the hull is still straight and true. Almost ready to start the dreaded planking. Looks like a long slog but I am looking forward to it with a bit of trepidation. Thinking that maybe I should have got 2 sets of plank clamps lol

Hiya Noob, Welcome aboard. The planking ain't that bad - just take it one plank at a time You'll soon catch up. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here - a lot of fun, the odd bit of lunacy thanks to the resident concert party and occasionally a bit of help when you need it.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I started the planking tonight. Maybe the plank clamps weren't such a good idea. So far I have broken 2 drill bits - the 1mm one when I dropped the pin vise and the 0.95mm one which broke in the hole as I was drilling. You only get 1 of each in the set. A mate at work has a pin driver which I think I'll try. 4 planks done. Only 100 more to do! lol

Welcome aboard, sounds as if you are catching us up rapidly!! ( we have been at it for nearly a year and the German crew about 15 months). I personally used brass pins left over from my titanic kit to fix the planks. They are driven in halfway on each frame, and then pulled out with pliers when glue has dried. Small hole virtually disappears if you dampen (not too much) the area around the hole. By driving in the pin at an angle, you can force the plank tight against the one above. Remember to glue the abutting edges first though!!! Where there is heavy curvature around the frame, you may need two pins across the plank, one top and one bottom. At end of plank you are advised to drill a small pilot hole in the plank first, else it might split. Second planking is easier than the first because you can glue the whole width of the plank for its full length (no frames to worry about) so here I mostly used sellotape to hold the plank in place while the glue dried. Finaly, always alternate planks each side, I usually do 2 on one side and then 2 the other. I aim to leave about 4 hours or so and then repeat with a max of 4 planks each side per day. (I use Evostik fast setting weatherproof wood glue). Best wishes to a happy build!!!

Welcome to the build and the family.
I too had never built anything like this before and by no means am I a hands on person (......nem insert joke here......) but must say I am happy with how well I have done.
I was freaking out since issue one about the planking but must say its not to bad at all once you get started, I am using small brass pins also.
Good luck
Trev
