Hi, This is the first model ship I have built and am having great fun so far. Have a few questions issues so I hope you can help me. First the easy stuff: At the moment I am using EVOstick Interior wood glue, should I switch to the external stuff (blue bottle)? I have got past the issue where it says to apply filler to the bow and have used Ronseal Multi Purpose Wood Filler is this the correct stuff? As I have gaps in my hull and have been reading I should fill these in to strengthen the model, so is this stuff ok? I am now onto applying the second lot of planking and have ordered some modelling pins as my clamps aren't working out. I assume its ok that I have small holes in my second lot of planking from these pins? Ok and lastly and I have seen some people mention the issues with Part 70 (resin stern part) and I too have an issue where it sticks out the back by 3-4mm, but I haven't attached it yet. It has been suggested I sand down the rib it attaches to or sand down the Resin part, but I have just seen that I could put an extra piece of wood onto the resin to make up the difference, will this affect later issues? I have attached some pics to show you what I mean. Oh and how does my other stern resin part position look in this picture? Can I fill all the gaps etc with wood filler?

Hi afkmatrix, welcome.
Firsty the glue - are you intending to use it as a static or R/C model. If its the R/C version you need to use the blue bottled glue.
Secondly , your stern piece (part d) looks just like mine I am intending to fill any gaps in with some filler. Now it is hard to tell if you have finished all the planking at the stern, but as I am still doing the second layer of plankingmine looks slightly different. But, I have shaped some planks to a very thin sliver to butt up right against the edges of part D so I have elimenated the gaps. Not sure of the filler to be used - so maybe someone else can be so kind to supply that info as I need to know as well.
Now for the part 70, yes mine is the same dimensions as yours, and I have as yet to fit it to my boat, but for the 3-74mm 'bit' sticking out, Im going to use a bent plank(left over from the first layer) soaked in ammonia to get more flex(as per another members excellent idea) and then sanding it down to flush with the deck piece. As for sanding I am only going to sand the resin piece so it sits at the correct 90 degree angle. Im not going to sand the ribs to make it fit.
But I am sure other more experience members of this board will advise if Im wrong.

Hi Achtung, Thanks for the help. I intend to hopefully do the R/C model. I have gone out at lunch and got the exterior Evostick glue. But I have used the interior glue to date on all of the first layer of planking and some of the second. Can I water down some of the exterior glue and brush it over the planks would this help? I also picked up some high performance wood filler that says it is water resistant. I have decided to add the extra plank to the top of part 70 as others have done and have got some ammonia ready to do this. And sand the top of the resin part so it is 90 deg. Also I am wondering if anybody can tell me where I can get Lime wood to the dimensions used in the model? I am in the UK and have looked in Homebase, B&Q etc with no luck. Lastly could someone link me to the post by Marcus about using 3 props instead of the Hattchettes 2 prop offer? And what is this I hear about laser cut planking? Sorry for all the questions but a bit of noob in this field

Welcome to the Forum Afkmatrix, some of us have not painted the glue inside the hull, we have used Resin from fibreglass kits, it is totally waterproof and adds extra strength to the hull. It stinks to high heaven, but if you were to coat the inside planking genorously i am sure you will be watertight inside. The extra lime planks have to be ordered online, try www.model-dockyard.com/default.htm scroll down to the bottom of the page for the planks. Look for Markus's info on his three motor set up in the German R/C thread. Good luck!!!

Welcome aboard. nice to see your model is coming along well. I decided to fit a piece of steamed 5 x 1mm plank around the ply part to level out with the part 70 bit. This has carried forward to match up to the extended planks along the side (so as to cover the sides of the deck, not the deck covering the sides. This mod as per Markus). I am starting to fit the real planked deck ontop of the ply deck, and thus my stern piece is now sanded down level with the veneer and NOT the ply deck! In issue 60 you will get an idea of the Hachette solution to decking and hence the thickness of their veneer, so I would recommend not sanding down the extra bit until you sort this out. Do not think the extra jutting out of bit 70 will effect the deck profile too much, certainly not in width, as long as you see a nice smooth transition along the hull with no jutting out at the stern! My method of individual, planking means no problems in length either. Part D has been set upwards (with hull upside down) with 1mm spacers by several of us, this allows the second planking to fit flush against it, and the second planking butts up to it and not go over it at the keel, which looks better than the Hachette photos. I personally use a two part wood filler for the small gaps around this area, this is waterproof and sands down very smoothly.

Thanks guys.
Swanrail do you possibly have any pictures so I can get a better Idea of what adding this extra plank will look like etc?
