There is no need to buy any dye etc for colouring the thread for the crane cables, just tie one end of the thread to some point near your workplace take it across to another point, a sort of miniture clothes line,then, pick up one of those large size perminant markers,( BLACK ) you must have one lying around somewhere, and run the felt tip back and fro a couple of times, leave it to dry, and you will have your black crane cables, without having to run around looking for material dye, a good point about this method is that the thread stays nice and pliable.

Good tip Julian. I use a similar method, but rather than a black marker, I paint the cables with heavily diluted black paint. I reckon your method is probably less messy !
