Good ideas an info. Thanks everyone....... cept Napoleon. It's my policy never to admit when he has a good idea. He only becomes unbearable, then. Seriously, though. I'm just surprised Hachette haven't hooked up with a company that makes display cases. It seems an obvious move to me.

Looking at the professional sites, a suitable case would appear to be about £300 with a mahogany base. I know when I made my Cutty Sark some 18 years ago, I found that a case for it would be about £150, which was twice the cost of the kit!!! So I did not bother. Now its getting a bit dusty.! Hopefully the Bismarck will be easier to clean (mine will get a wash when afloat now and again) so I can justify NOT buying a case for it!!!

Ooh! Nice find, Cliff. I'm gonna order me wanna those.
Yup, I can imagine a propper job would cost a fortune so I'll stick with a home made one by the guy next door, lol. Whatever happens, it's definately going in a case of some description. One of my pet peeves was how dust collected on all my plastic models and what a pain in the ass it was to dust them without pulling bits off 'em.

Any woodworkers out there? Here are the display cases that I made for my Titanics. They were made from Ultra high impact 3mm acrylic sheet (made by amperglas). This is similar to Perspex but the sheet can be rolled up and tied and transported home on the back seat of your car. When you undo the tie, the sheet restores to a flat sheet. The ends, sides and top were cut with a tungsten blade on my triton workcentre (saw table). The sides were butt jointed and 1mm holes were drilled the length of a 1mm brass pin (see diagram). The pin holes were countersunk by hand using a dremel type burr and the sides pinned together with 1mm brass pins (you could also use 1mm brass rod cut to length and forego the countersinking). When the 5 pieces are assembled, check that the assembly is square and then thin CA glue is carefully dribbled down the joins and drawn into the joints by capillary action: BE CAREFUL TO USE THE GLUE SPARINGLY! When fully dried, the edges were covered over with 12.7 mm equal angle anodized aluminium (grey colour), using a thin bead of clear silicone sealer. On the inside of the case where you can see the pins, these were covered with a strip of 13mm wide grey adhesive stripe obtainable from car accessory or model shops. This blended in perfectly and appears to be the underside of the anodized aluminium. The base was made from a piece of sapele veneered chipboard set into an outer moulded frame. The frame was moulded before assembly with a rebate on the inside to allow the case to sit between the frame and the chipboard and to a depth of 5mm (see diagram). The vertical side pieces of aluminium stopped 5mm from the bottom of the case to allow it to fit into the rebate. The boat was anchored to the base as shown in the diagram. Mike B
