Does anyone know if Hachette offer an option to buy display case at the end of the build or will I have to make/buy one myself? I'm thinking along the lines of a base with a perspex cover.

I think you might have to get handy with building one of your own.

I will probably make a display case myself. I know of a local Platic sheeting shop close to my humble abode and I will be asking their advice. I lovely Mahogany base with brass stands will look vwery nice me thinks?

I would have dearly loved to put all my models in display cases, problem is that they tend to make the model much bigger overall and hence take up a lot of space, which I do not have - in fact in about 115 weeks time I have got to find a home for this model but have no idea where!!! On the Victory site (Snapshots) there is a superb model of the Victory on a "sea" in a plastic case, but BIG!!!

Ahh, I thought that may be the case. My next dorr neighbour is a chippy who's always making furniture n fittings for his own place so I may see if he's interested in making something fancy for it. The mag doesn't state what the height of the finished model is, including any stand it may be on. Any ideas?

Also would you not have to take into account the height of the stand as well?

Exactly. It would be useful if hachette would supply us with this info so we can have the cases ready before the model's finished.

Hi Nemesis, It is my umble opinion that the height of the model, from keel to top of main mast, will be approximately 300mm. This is an assumption based on technical drawings.

Thanks for the info, Napoleon. Can I hold you personally responsible if I pay for a custom made display case and discover I have to chop the top off the model to make it fit? I'm just thinking about possible a compensation claim.

I was thinking of this topic the other day when I began building mine. I have an aquarium builder close by that makes custom fish tanks. He's already made a few "tanks" for my other models - 1/350 Bismarck, 1/72 flower corvette and they aren't very expensive. ie $60 for one to fit over the 1/72 corvette, which is probably a similar height to the bismarck. Then all I need is a quality wood base and hey presto... permanent case.
Only draw back is they are heavy.. but glass looks very nice and its made out of thick stuff so it won't break in a hurry. If you want to get very fancy you can put wood trim around as a frame..

Hi Rod,
I must admit a nice mahogany trim would look nice but because of the cost of the model itself, all the other bits and pieces required, need to keep costs down.

Napoleon, why am I not surprised that you had to marry a solicitor in order to keep your arse covered, lol?
I like the idea of glass myself, Rod but the issue I have with that is the weight. My model is on a shelf and I'm not sure the weight of a glass display case wouldn't pull the fixings out of the plasterboard wall.

Taking measurements from the fly sheet in issue 1, the total depth of the model is 25% of the length. This makes it 31.25cm (or 12.25 inches) excluding any cradle or stand. If you are intending to use glass, make sure it is safety glass, as the display case will be very heavy and if dropped could be lethal. And be warned Napoleon, a certain Mr Wellington has offered to come to my aid if I receive any more threats!

Great thread I was about to ask a similar thing myself.
I was thinking of a perspect (speling?) case like an upside down aquarium but on a nice board that has been routed and varnished around the edges then on a nice wooden aquarium like stand with cupboards underneath that way it also has a use.

That is probably a good reasonably cheap solution and if you had an all glass tank then you could trim the excess silicon away from the edges because it's not going to be under any pressure as would if being used as a tank. You cauld also rebate a groove to fit the tank lip into thus giving a completely dust proof seal ;D Good idea Trev 10/10 from me (Spelling is Perspex or Acrylic Sheets ) What do you recon?
