Hi Everyone
This is my first contribution to this forum.
At the moment I have 136 issues of the Bismarck and are currently busy with issue 35.
I have read a lot of tips all over the internet from experienced ship builders and that helps a lot in terms of what to do and what not to do.
Here is two tips that I want to share with you all. Maybe some of you do it already, anyhow not all of us knows everything all the time.
1. For filler, I use cold glue and then mixed it with very fine wood particles, that I have sanded off from my other woodwork hobbies. It is easy to work with, fills very well, can be made into any thickness, extremely strong, can be painted over and glue with any glue (because it is in essence still nearly 100% wood), etc, etc. Be warned however that it becomes quite hard and thus to sand it off, you need an electric sander, because by hand will be tough going.
2. I also use 100% of the time superglue for all my glueing purposes. Yes, yes, I can hear you all screaming that it will cost you a fortune. Yes and no. I got hold of a big supplier, where I buy my superglue for about 20 times less than in the shops. The main advantage is that I build/glue all my woodwork in a matter of seconds, without to wait for anything. I must say the superglue is realy strong. Careful however when building this way, the glue gives you only about 3 seconds to fit parts correctly and thus you need to have good hands and to fit each part beforehand. With other glues you have of course more time to fit the parts until you are satisfied. Get rid of the superglue from your fingertips with acetone.
Hope it helps.
Enjoy your building.
Pieter
