Hi guys, I was just browsing through the bismarck.oehm.net site and came across a pic that puzzled me a little. I notice on the pic at bismarck.oehm.net/zeigebilder.php?foto=036036_269 that he appears to have stopped the armoured belt short of the stern by adding more planking. My armoured belt goes all the way to the stern and the bow, though it tapers off to a shallower gradient as you get either end, and was wondering which way is correct.

I think he's got it right Nem. Have a look at some of the photos of the real ship in the mag.
I like the way he's not bothered with the ply parts. I had been thinking of doing the same thing. I.e. Binning the ply and planking with the lime planks for several reasons. 1 The ply parts don't fit - they are too deep. 2 Some of the port holes are wrong. Why bother to fill in extra holes, when it's easier just to drill the right ones. According to the German preview there is a template supplied later. 3 It will be easier to apply the planks than the ply parts.

Mark,
I was also thinking of ditching the ply parts and using planks to finish it off and I was just going to use the ply parts as a template for the portholes but you say the portholes are in the wrong place! Are we talking serious errors or just a minor difference? I can live with ‘minor errors. I think I am the only one to use the original stern resin part…. Yes I know…a long way off being a true modeller!

Hi Gordon, To some an extra rivet is the end of the world !!! There are a couple of extra portholes that could be filled in, but we are missing a whole row of portholes. Have a look at the German preview issue 54 www.subifa.de/heftvorschau/die_bismarck_h54.htmI think you'd have to be a serious Bismarck nut to spot the error. I'm not usually bothered with small errors (plenty on my Titanic) but I'll sort this one as it's easy to fix.

Thanks Mark. More to think about as I go along. I'm also one of those who isn't overly concerned about details such as wrongly placed portholes but as you say, if it's an easy fix, I may as well do it.

Mark,
See what you are saying and it looks like an easy fix - will give it a go.
Thanks..

I did use the ply parts, but with the ply at the bow I scored three deep line into the back of it, as per the ply parts 196, this allowed the ply to bend into the curved shap of the bow flare, otherwise it would have glued flat.

How far round do the planks go? ie how far towards the front do they wrap around? I am going to be bending some plank round part 70 as it sticks out around 3-4mm so I can do this rear armour planking at the same time.
