Hi everyone!
Since joining I haven't made many posts...truth is I'm more of an observer. I love to see comments made by members and the posts relating to build problems etc. what is great to see is the immediate help given by the more advanced modellers when those of us with less experience come up to what seems to us a brick wall.
Anyhow, I got to very near the end of the 1st layer planking and came to a complete halt when it came to installing the layer above the armour belt....from reading the instructions and subsequent visits to other builders threads I was led to believe that the layer that starts above the armour step would end up being only one layer deep, not two (as with the rest of the ship's hull). Not only this BUT...the edge of the top ply decking would come over the top also, thereby creating another seam line to join AND the later potential of that seam showing as the model ages.
Now, not liking this particular approach by Hachette I've ended up stalling on this model for weeks........
Then suddenly, one of those eurika (spellcheck) moments. I decided to attack my Bismark with an AXE!....Well, more like a scalpal and razer saw. Basically, I've cut off a 1mm strip from both edges of the plywood deck, from the step point near the bow to the step point near the stern......somberly sobbing at the same time because there was no fallback from what I was doing. I may have ruined my model (some people may think I still have) This resulted in the deck edge ending on the same outside level as all the main ribs.
I obtained some 1mm thick lime sheet and cut a 16mm wide strip and glued this piece from above the armour step to the edges of the ribs, making sure that the glue did not touch the ply deck so the removable deck is still 'removable'. This upper armour layer is now basically two stips only....the join being on rib 7 towards the stern. And, at present ,before trimming it is just above the level of the deck. This also means that the removable deck now sits behind a continuous strip and looks much tidier. I intend to build the display version only, not R/C, so I will eventually glue down the deck (as shown in later issues).
The result is much more visually appealing and allows for a much more time enduring finish. I have taken pictures but haven't fathomed out how to include in the post yet...I'll probably come back and include them later once I've worked it out (or someone has thrown me a lifeline!!)
But now I feel I can resume the build and that is why..... I FEEL MUCH BETTER NOW!
