I noticed that Don (Swanrail) had a problem with sourcing the correct thickness strips for his deck planking. I intend to plank my deck as well so I modified my electric planer in order to plane down my 1.6mm tongue depressors to under 1mm. The following pictures show my modification. Larger pics can be seen at s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc240/MikeBer/Titanic%20pics/Tips/Planer/Picture 02 shows the thickness gauge strips. These are the thickness you want after planing the wood.

Phew, I take my hat to you!!! Still, knowing my planer which is a bit of a devil even on more chunky wood, I think that I will give it the go-by! Be interesting to hear how you get on with the planking.

Hi Don, I surprised myself with this one! Normally, my experiments only work after about the Mk V version, but this worked out first time. It was surprisingly easy. After a succesful test run, I fitted new blades and it goes like a dream! What is not clear in the photos is that the square piece of wood covering the blades is glued to the top crosspiece. I am only collecting the issues at the moment (up to week 7) and it will be a long time before I reach the deck stage but I am preparing the groundwork. I have built a miniature sliding saw table using my miniature drill and a Dremel saw blade, to cut the tongue depressors into 1mm wide strips. s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc240/MikeBer/Titanic%20pics/Tips/Sliding%20saw/
