One of our club members does a lot of scratch building and he came up with a great idea for homemade ply for making frames etc. He makes a sandwich using 3mm Balsa with 0.5mm veneer glued on both sides, grains at 90° to each other. He uses sheet veneer but you can just as easily use 20mm wide veneer edging. You can use the pre-glued or non-glued. This will give you a nominal 4mm ply which is very light and easy to cut and profile. Having a Balsa core, it will not warp.

I've been playing with thin gauge plastic and have a mate that can cut for me. Tell you what, strong as hell and light enough for my RC planes. Good tip about Ply though, will give it a go at weekend
