Thanks for the comments and K guys!!
Spot on tigerace, I painted the red upto 50mm, then bottom of waterline at 43mm.
I have deviated from the instructions about painting method though....the instructions call for the whole upper hull to be painted white first, then black, then the light grey. An odd way of going, I thought, so I just did it as I have always done.....that is, paint lower hull red, paint upper hull grey, then paint waterline coal black (anthricite) I will paint in the white parts in the next few days hopefully.
I will say though that this is the first and last model I will spray with Humbrol paints, next time I will use different ones to spray. I found the Humbrol a bit grainy when sprayed and even worse sometimes dried very unevenly. To my unending frustration I eventually had to hand brush the grey on the upper hull over my spraying attempts. It looks OK, and will be fine with a bit of weathering.

The reason I believe for the work-flow you mention is:
The first coat of primer will show any defects that need fixing and provide a key for the subsequent coats.
A very thin spray of black will provide shadows later.
Next comes multiple thin coats of the grey. If sprayed from an angle, the black layer will give a slight shadow below covers and other detail (got there eventually).
When you are happy with the grey coat, a coat of future floor polish can be applied to seal the paint and give a slight satin texture.
I will give a pin wash around details to exaggerate where required.
You can then dry brush a lighter grey coat over the detail.
Then seal with matt varnish.
That’s my initial thought.

Latest update pics. I have painted the swastika's as they were after they were painted over at Bergen, just a hint of them showing through. Yesterday I attached on about 50 parts, but they are all so small that it is hard to notice them! Half way through issue 137 just now, starting to go mental with all the tiny parts to put on....eyesight going too!!

Nice job indeed Eric.
Weren't the baltic strips (the black and white ones) also painted out in the same way, leaving traces of the black and white behind ? (Runs away ducking)

Nice job indeed Eric. Weren't the baltic strips (the black and white ones) also painted out in the same way, leaving traces of the black and white behind ? (Runs away ducking) LOL! ;D Yup, I will be finishing the hull with slight signs of the baltic strips showing and some places around the boot-topping line with more visable white markings, and darker grey along the waterline bow and stern where the dark grey sections had been but they were unable to paint out completely.

I am at the same stage as you and just about round the twist already.. I must have went through about 10 tins of fine spray primer already.

Got the starboard side more or less painted, just need to do some more weathering. I deliberetely painted the white and daek grey top edges a bit rough, I don't think they had a chance to mark off the edges at Bergen when they painted out the stripes. I have taken a long look at Peter Beisheims model and am following him somewhat. You should be able to just about make out the stripes through the grey hull paint, I hope!
