G.Day Greg, Yes i also look forward to building the project. The finished unit looks good even if it is plated with brass. Provided they have plated the components with a good covering i can see no problems. Gerry Gerry, This link www.irishastronomy.org/boards/viewtopic.php?t=8374&start=45 will take you a website run by Irish Astronomers. A few of the site's members are building and discussing the orrery. In particular I like the idea of using shoe polish to create the contrast on the base plate, a nice touch but I wonder how long it would be before the polish deteriorates. Greg.

G.Day Greg. Had the 2nd and 3rd issue arrive today. The Sun and the Shafts are all Ferrous brass plated but the small base and the gears are possibly Brass. In the introductory the Sun is supposed to be Silver plated. I was a little concerned about the as Silver will tarnish in our atmosphere unless of course its well coated with a clear lacquer. My Sun is only Brass Plated. I have left the units unopened for now until i receive other items, only i must be carefull where i put the Sun and Shaft container as they are covered on their backs with a Goo that holds them to the large card and when you put it down it sticks to whatever is underneath. Look forward to receiving the next units. Gerry

I thought it was only the planets that were silver plated. I think the sun is best brass plated.
That goo is horrible stuff. I've cursed it many times, and that was only with the first issue.

The sellotape that is used to hold the gears and screws inside the plastic 'folders', is a nightmare. I mean, why is sellotape used, the parts are held inside the plastic folders ok and the parts are used when the packets are opened. I have up to issue 11 built and had no building problems up till now.

G,Day all, Sorry for the wrong info on the Silver coating of the Sun,got mixed up a little with the Planets. Re some of the problems that are occurring with screwing the various screws in place and finding they bind. This is possibly due to having the protective coating on both parts. The only way out would be to retap the screw holes, thereby halving the problem. I don't like the idea of setting the screws with 'Locktight' or similar as 10 to 1 a need will arise to loosen the screw down the track to make an adjustment or fit something that has been forgotten. The Old Watch/Clock repairers had a method of holding the various screws. They would pluck out a hair from their head and place it in the hole then fit the screw. Maybe that is why most Horologists i knew were bald Gerry

G.Day All, Yes is has finaly arrived out here in Australia so i went out and purchased the starter kit. The Base plate is 4.3/8" Dia or 110 mm in the new fangled measurment. It looks smart although the so called engravings are not very clear due to the high gloss of the coating and the not so deep engraving(stamping). It is not made of Brass! try the Magnet test. It is possibly made by the sinterated method and then brass plated, pity. I went out and purchased another one as they being the first issue was very cheep and they make a very good stand for something or other. The gears are stated to be machined from Brass but time will tell. Any way i still look forward to building this project. Gerry. Not reached Canberra yet.

G.Day All, Had a communique from the suppliers who stated that further supplies would be only 2 issues per month instead of the original 4 issues per month. It would seem that Western Australia will get their orders first. Had issues 6 and 7 arrive this morning along with a Tool Kit and a Folder to place the magazines into. These items are really first class. The tool kit is supplied with three quality crosspoint screwdrivers of different size's,5 allen keys,a polishing cloth and 2 excelent dusting brushes all in a smart zip up case. The folder is something else, not your usual ring binder but a well thought out design to hold the magazines individually. I am still undesided as to the way to go with the enhansement of the engravings on the base. I know that the Irish Astronomical boys who are also well ahead in the building of the project have used Shoe Polish in the engravings which make them stand out.but they do not know weather or not it will be permanent, time will tell. Speaking of Time, the old clock makers had a process of filling the engravings with Black Enamel when making their Clock Faces. Received another Engraved Gear with issue 7,simular to the first Engraved Gear that came with the first issue. Until i decide as to what is best i think i will hold fast with the building and see what transpires. Gerry
