I just wanted to let the good people on here know that this magazine starts up again on 5th march. I got the first 5 issues a couple of months ago and the quality of the parts was excellent. www.build-solar-system.com/As good a place as any to start, I should say.

G.Day All, Yes is has finaly arrived out here in Australia so i went out and purchased the starter kit. The Base plate is 4.3/8" Dia or 110 mm in the new fangled measurment. It looks smart although the so called engravings are not very clear due to the high gloss of the coating and the not so deep engraving(stamping). It is not made of Brass! try the Magnet test. It is possibly made by the sinterated method and then brass plated, pity. I went out and purchased another one as they being the first issue was very cheep and they make a very good stand for something or other. The gears are stated to be machined from Brass but time will tell. Any way i still look forward to building this project. Gerry.

Hi Gerry, I also picked one of the first issues today when I went to the newsagents for my weekly Bismarck dose. Have to agree that the engraving is slightly disappointing but overall it looks promising.
Regards Greg.

I was really looking forward to it but I changed my mind when seeing the first part. Thought it looked a bit cheap and shiny. Sorry.

G.Day Greg, Yes i also look forward to building the project. The finished unit looks good even if it is plated with brass. Provided they have plated the components with a good covering i can see no problems. Gerry

I gather that the non-function parts (like the engraved plate) are plated brass. The engraving is obviously cast in, but the plating seems to be well done. However, each to their own. Looks good to me anyway, but then, I'm the biggest magpie out here
