Hi alanv, I am actually working on 4 different plans at the same time: 1) Shipyard plans from Brest. You can download from www.servicehistorique.sga.defense.gouv.fr/02fonds-collections/banquedocuments/planbato/planbato/Plans/planbato.php?id=468 (the end of the link has to be ".....?id=468" to work, but for some reason the link will not display correctly in this post). I am mainly using plan "RICHELI1940PL3933". Drawback is that some deatils (especially armament) are wrong compared to her appearence after the NY refit, and other details are not all that clear. Scale had to be resized in Photoshop into 1/200. 2) Details of bow and stern curvatures are better shown on drawings from Jean Bart (sistership) downloaded from the same website as above. Scale also had to be resized in Photoshop into 1/200. 3) Polish 1/200 drawings made by Dane Technichze (I will have to look up the website for downloading if you are interested). All A4 sized and therefore had to be added together in Photo Editor to be one full size ship. The 1/200 scale turned out to be not quite true (a little too small), and therefore also had to be resized in Photoshop. 4) A printed 1/200 plan, purchased at the local hobby shop for AU$25, and made by Edward H Wiswesser, USA. This plan is a little too large to be true 1/200, but is otherwise quite good. I must admit that I have also invested in a 1/200 (Polish) cardmodel of Richelieu. Not to build, nor to substitute a drawing in any way (the ship is also 2cm too short to be true 1/200), but as an aid to give me a better 3D visualisation of all the small details involved in the build. And then of course I use all the downloaded pictures of the ship that I have been able to collect from the internet. Hope this answers your question. Cheers .... Poul

This link to the French government site should work properly, but needs a few more mouse clicks: www.servicehistorique.sga.defense.gouv.fr/02fonds-collections/banquedocuments/planbato/atlas/central.htmDO NOT type any name in the box, but instead click below on the red link "Liste des bateaux disponibles" to display all available plans, and then click on the name of the French ship you are interested in plans from - in this case "RICHELIEU". You can download the plans one by one (in case of Richelieu there are 41 in total). Be prepared to be patient because of the file sizes. Also, make sure that you have a program that can read the different TIFF file extensions (not just .tif as the plans are .tiff). I use Photoshop. Poul

Hi alanv,
If you want to build in scale 1/200, I have alreay resized and mirrored the frames, ready to print and use as templates. There is 12.1m (60.5mm in scale 1/200) between each frame.
I can email you the two jpg files if you give me your email address. (Don't forget to deduct the thickness of your planks).
Happy modelling,
Poul

Hi All, My supervisor dog, Mr Mozart, has been watching me closely lately, so things ARE happening, and it is time for a little update on my (slow) progress on the Richelieu. Many of the details for the hull are ready to be painted and mounted when the time comes, though some will have to be redone and improved, and the decks (templates) are in place so planking can commence when I find a proper 1mm timber veneer - I have rejected my initial choice of Tasmanian Oak (excellent greyish colour though), the grain being too coarse for 1mm planks. After seemingly endless hours of filling and sanding, I have now started working on the superstructure. Here are pictures of the first bare part of the superstructure base. And a bit more close up Sometimes, when I am stuck with a detail on the model, I think I am getting too old for this, but on the other hand I really enjoy this - my new modelling lifestyle - more and more. I think it is starting to look better and better - hope you think so too. Poul

Well done, Poul, its looks very good and coming along well. On the bismarck, I am using 1mm lime for the decks, whne varnished its tends to look like holystoned teak decks, which become bleached through the scrubbing. As the grain is very fine there is no trouble there. Be interesting to see your finished decks!

Hi Swanrail,
I am actually looking for lime, but have only found it in 0.6mm thickness so far. Won't work for me.
If I get into trouble, I'll let you know and maybe you can help me organise something.
Cheers .... Poul

The 1mm lime strips are supplied as the 2nd planking with the Bismarck, but in the UK they can also be bought from: www.model-dockyard.com/they do send overseas, but guess that the shipping costs would be very high. In the UK there is a surcharge for wood due to the 1metre lengths, but no doubt cheaper if you can let them cut in half, or quarters.......

Thanks Swanrail,
I have now emailed Model Dockyard about the lime sheet and will eagerly await their reply. I also found some other items of interest in their catalogue, so it will probably end up at around £50 all up. Or maybe an extra £10-15, if they also can supply 4-4.5mm wide stairs.
I have found the perfect stairs I need on the 4D modelshop website, but - weighing less than 100g in total - they want to charge a ridiculous £20 to ship those 5 small plastic packs to Australia. That is about 10 times the real cost if mailed in eg. a CD cardboard box.
Sometimes you may think that some of those internet suppliers make more money on the frieght than they do on their consumables.
Oh yeah .... I got it out - and it feels very, very, very good!!!!
