Waiting for warmer weather (to paint the rocket) would suit the people of Rochdale.

The table is a lovely piece of furniture. Can't remember the name of the wood, but it's from the Indian subcontinent.
The doll is Japanese - dressed in a hand made silk Kimono. It's about 20 years old.

The table is a lovely piece of furniture. Can't remember the name of the wood, but it's from the Indian subcontinent. The doll is Japanese - dressed in a hand made silk Kimono. It's about 20 years old. I'm amazed at the similarity of tastes. My wife has 2 of these dolls she bought at an auction on the Island. A dealer from the mainland outbid her, but then relented and sold them to her before departing as he was only going to sell them in his shop. Annie wanted them as a sentimental reminder of the lady who bought & owned them. They were brought back from Japan in the 50's I think Will photograph them on the weekend. They are exquisite. Also the table looks very similar to a timber we have here in Australia called Tasmanian Blackwood. It was popular for making furniture in the late 1800's and has a beautiful dark red brown colour too. Very difficult to come by these days, and costs a Kings ransom. No good for fine modelling though. Baz

I'll post a photo of the doll sometime soon. I brought it new while I was working in Japan, in a little shop, tucked out of the way that specialised in dolls. Well off the beaten track !!
I also have a couple of silk Chinese rugs from my recent stint in China. My wife mercilessly bargained the price down to about 20% of the original asking price. I almost felt sorry for the shop keeper. It was quite amusing when the shop keeper, who obviously thought my wife was a tour guide, said something along the lines of, if you persuade the foreigner to buy the rugs I'll give you a commission !!
The table is fairly new - I'm sure it's not Tasmanian Blackwood tho.

I loved both your Japanese dolls stories, Mark and Baz! Very amusing indeed and… guess what? It’s really a very small world. I too own one of them, LOL!!! It was offered to me about 15-17 years ago by some CEO at Mainichi Newspapers’ (Asahi Shimbun is part of it) when my newspaper, the Int'l Herald Tribune started printing on their rotary presses. I pamper her jealously since, as she's the only thing of value brought back from Japan, along with a tin box of chocolate powder (which I use to store my pencils) and four assembling plastic robot kits! As Baz, with his two dolls, mentioned of taking pictures of them, plus yours and mine, why don't we start a thread?! Robert
