What was her name at Bikini? USS Prinz Eugen? It was as "unclassified miscellaneous vessel USS Prinz Eugen (IX-300)" "The IX (unclassified–miscellaneous) hull classification symbol is used for ships of the United States Navy that do not fit into one of the standard categories. While most of the vessels in this category were unnamed barges and floating shipyard equipment, it also includes retired battleships, training equipment and simulators, war prizes, and experimental vessels". Did the first couple of purchases for PE (or PG as she is called in official naval abbreviation language) today: Plywood for the frames and the keel, and a sheet of 3mm MDF for the false deck. I also bought a 1.5m long shelf of laminated solid timber - not for the purpose of a shelf, but to use as a solid base plate for the hull (upside down) while planking to avoid any warping - and in 3 years time use as the base plate for the display case (double value ;D). All frames are ready to be printed, and so are the hull lines for the bow and stern sandwiches that will be build up by 10mm pine 'slices'. Hopefully Santa will bring me the scroll saw on top of my wish list for Christmas The planked decks will be placed on top of the false deck, so it can be planked outside the hull on a 2mm plywood sheet. So the total cut out in the frames to accommodate the false deck and the real deck will be 6mm. The hull planking will be 2mm - single planking only - with planks cut from 6mm pine. Still looking good for the first pictures in mid January

Hi paulw, any updates ont he build Progress, im really looking forwards to seeing yet aniother Splendid scratch build from you Hi russ, I am sorry, but the yard has been closed over summer. It will however be up and running again next month. Must admit that I have been a bit disappointed myself over the lack of progress, but I suddenly realised that weed grows quickly in the garden - especially when it has been ignored for a couple of years (while I was working on Richelieu) - so a summer break has been necessary.

Happy Easter everyone.
I am now feeling fine again after my hospital scare. Saw the Doctor today, and he is happy with my progress as well.
While having relaxed for 3 weeks, I got a bit tired of reading and watching DVDs all day, so in between I have finished my hull drawings with the details needed to start building the Prinz. This includes drawings of the bow and stern sandwiches and the false deck.
I think I am now feeling ready to start cutting the frames and the keel just after Easter and then hopefully start easing into the build.

Hi again to all. Due to a lack of ability to concentrate after my stroke it's taken a while, but I finally put my act together and started the build. Still only working 15 minutes at a time between brakes though. The frames and keel glued onto plywood and ready to be cut with my new scroll saw: Frames and keel are cut and dry fitted in front of Richelieu: Looking good so far and hopefully more to come soon.

Glad you're back in the groove Poul. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one come together. Thank you Mark. Like my Richelieu model, I'll only plank the hull with one layer of 2mm planks (btw my model will only be static). So today I cut the planks, and it went amazingly smooth and easy. I first cut 2mmx19mm planks from some 120cm long pieces of pine on my bench saw, and then used my Proxxon saw - with a 0.6mm wide blade - to cut those in 3 and get the 2mmx6mm planks I need: and I ended up with a nice big handful: Tomorrow I hope to have the false deck made ready so I can start building the hull.
