So, following requests from my other thread, I am now going to embark on a build diary for De Agostini's Yamato. You can see the ship here: model-space.co.uk/ships/battleship-yamatoso I wont give any detail on the ship itself here. The concept is get the bits in the post each month, and an e:mail comes with the instructions for those particular bits (plus an email magazine about the real ship). Just before Christmas my e:mail arrived with over 6meg of pdf to read. I must say that the instructions are exceptional. each stage has a photo which is very clear and miles better than you get in shop kits. My first parts arrived this morning (29 Dec), so I will take a photo and up load them shortly. C:\Users\James\Pictures\yamato ins.jpg[/img]

Nice one JJ, nice to hear that the first impression is good. I hope the build goes well, and needless to say, we all look forward to the pictures

OK, here is a photo of the first bits of the kit as they arrived. Packaging is very good, there are three blister packs and one bag of stuff. Included is a small file, wooden bits to start the hull and various metal parts (look like white metal and brass). there is the bridge, one antiaircraft comand post, main gun and main gun comand post all made of the metal. Got relies here for a few days so might be a while till I actualy get chance to start the build.

I am still waiting for the postman to deliver paint, primer etc for the metal parts but I have made a start on the wooden bits. Here is the hull so far:

Generally the parts to the hull fit very wel, and very snuggly. Just one part of the strengthening pieces were a little too long so I had to nip off the ends as you can see in this picture.... They are hidden parts so I haven't wasted time making the finish perfect. Although looking at the close up photo again, I think I might make a litle better effort at it!!!!

OK, for the first problem-et. As you can see in the following picture, these two pieces of the deck do not fit quite flush (the other section was much better. How good a fit does it need to be? do I need to work on it a bit more or will it cover up as I progress the build? Thoughts please?

Are the pieces steady and aligned left and right (do they stay straight?)? Is it only an up-and-down problem?

I would certainly try to get them level with each other otherwise you might have problems with any subsequent deck covering, or if it's just painted the join will stick out like a sore thumb.

Looking good there jj44. I am also building this kit but will leave it till I get the Bissy finished. This will give me time to gather a few issues.
What kind of paint have you ordered?

This looks like a great kit JJ.
I was wondering though....where you had to snip the strenghtening parts to clear the slot, does the part that will fit into the slot also fit into the small holes on the bottom? if so you may have to make the strenghthening part flush right down to the bottom.
Keep up the diary, I am quite jealous!
