I think I saw somewhere that these parts get put on the hull at a later date.

Well, now y RTTL Vosper is up and running, weather and swans permitting, its back to the Bismarck. Just attached for deck and stern deck piece part 63 with filler pieces to make flush with removeable aft deck. So, what did miss? Nah just kidding, been following your brass dilemmas and seem up to snuff on that.Oh and got wood for side extensions as well. Will post pics of Vosper and Bis later this week. Robert

Hi I am busy with the Bismark as well. but in South Africa we did not get part no1. So I made my own by using another part 2 and getting a piece of sheeting from the local model shop. Today I got parts no 31,32,33,34. 24/05/2008. Any comments. Aleck

Hi Aleck.
If you're not happy with your Part 1, someone here can send you a scan of the part, I'm sure - just ask.
(Can't send you one myself!)

A photocopy might do the job for him - cheaper to send.
Or convert it to an email?

Hi Aleck, Don't understand you correctly. Do you mean part No.1 or weekly issue No. 1? Issue 1 came out in SA with 2 frets, one of which contained parts 1A & 1B. I can send you bitmap scans of these parts if you want?

Hi. I am having problems with getting my hull smooth. I have covered the entire hull with a light coat of filler and applied 2 coats of primer. There are still several places were the hull is rough and looking anew I can see the outline of the planks. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can correct this?
Many Thanks Robert

Hi Rob, Sand it back to wood with fine sandpaper, give it a couple of coats of sanding sealer, and sand again. Repeat until you get a smooth finish, it may take a few goes depending on how deep the rough bits are.
When you think you are done, give it a light coat of primer and sand that off. You will see all the imperfections left as the primer will be left in any hollows or dents in the hull. These can be filled & sanded, and then you should get a perfect finish.

Thank you Mark, I will do this. When you say sanding sealer do you mean wood filler?

Thank you Mark, I will do this. When you say sanding sealer do you mean wood filler? Robert Hi Robert, If I may reply to your question. "Sanding sealer" is what you ask for and is obtainable at model shops (expensive in small quantities) or a paint shop (much cheaper but bigger tins). It is a cellulose based liquid sealer which you brush on. It dries in a couple of minutes and must be applied in a well ventilated area as the fumes are similar to car aerosol sprays. You clean your brush in cellulose thinners. It is commonly sprayed on new furniture to seal the grain before spraying with clear lacquer. It is excellent stuff for sealing wooden hulls and so simple to use. A friend of mine who is a serious model sailing ship builder never uses varnish, only sanding sealer on his hulls.

Many of us have used 'Glattfix' as reccomended by Markus, applied in the exact way 'sanding sealer' is. Stinks to high heaven!

I can't see this in any of the original photos?!!Martin, do you mean the area that is stepped in? It is very clear on the pics you showed, it is the part of the hull that is above the thick 12.5 inch armoured belt, the hull has a small sharp step in, about half way up from the waterline then continues up to the rail level. These two planks are to simulate this. Hope this helps.

I do not intend sailing my ship so do not require any water-proofing. Will wood filler give me as good a finish as sanding sealer/glattfix on the hull? Many Thanks Robert
