Nobody knows, but the loss of Hood would have been the same, I presume. If the Bismarck would have had the Graf Zeppelin and maybe 1 or 2 escorting destroyers behind her, the Prince of Wales would probably also have been destroyed on that terrible day.
Thank God that carrier never went into duty. That saved a hell of a lot of lives, on both sides.
Cheers
Paul

Well I think the germans would have launched some aircraft and tried to sink the Hood. That "lucky shot" from the Bismarck would probably never happened and after all the situation would be very unclear.
But in the end, the Bismarck would have been sunk (as well as the german aircraft carrier).

Just my opinion but if the GZ had CAP's in place they would Probably have sank the Prince Of Wales and the Hood. Infact the Prince Of Wales along with the Repulse were sunk by Japanese navy aircraft off Kuantan in Dec 1941. Im afraid the aircraft carrier was the death of the battle ship, Even the mighty Japanese battle ship Yamato succumbed to naval air power.

If the Bismarck would have had the Graf Zeppelin and maybe 1 or 2 escorting destroyers behind her, the Prince of Wales would probably also have been destroyed on that terrible day. The problem with the escort destroyers was, that the "Kriegsmarine" had no destroyers, which an employment in the Atlantic undertake can. Because of this deficit one planned the type of the "Spähkreuzer".

Hi Blane, welcome aboard mate. I hope you'll have a lot of fun here. I don't think your quite right with your thoughts regarding the destroyers. If the Graf Zeppelin would have been commissioned as planned, I'm sure they would have found a couple of them to escort her, at least one or two. However the "Spaehkreuzer" sounds to be an interesting option. Another thought could be a cruiser as escorting vessel ?. We'll never know. Cheers Paul

It is completely simply Paul. Which type of destroyer would you like to give with the GZ as escort? Those looks at times the operating ranges of the destroyers. Also it is not a secret that the German rather "fair-weather-ships" built. Also the heavy ones and light cruiser were not appropriate for an employment in the Atlantic. Since Germany saw its future enemy in France and Russia, one built accordingly ships. Thus battle ships as answer to "Dunkerque-class" and the other ships for the Baltic Sea.

Hi Blane, good thoughts - but - who ever said that the GZ was supposed to be sent into the Atlantic ? As far as I know, she was planned to be a part of the attacking force against England - OK, the British channel can be a nasty bit of water at certain times, but I think she and the probably the escorting destroyers too would have coped with that. Your turn Cheers Paul
