I have just ordered my D-Cell NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries to go in my homemade plastic tubing holder (see see details above). I got the most powerful ones around, some 12Ah each at 1.2v (they come as a button top, the same as a normal D-cell torch battery but heavier at 165gm - 5.8 ozs or with a solder tag at each end). They are USA $8.55 each (for 4 to 7), so 5 of then, for 6v, costs about $43 and the airmail delivery (4 to 14 days) is about $20, total about $63 or 50 Euro (www.batteryjunction.com). The all-up weight is about half that of a 12Ah lead acid battery. You can say that again! Oh, sorry, you did. nm

This is the first first view of Bismarck's new secret weapon - which was due to start trials when she got back to Germany - the first (manned) surface-to-surface anti-ship missile.

Looking really good there Popeye, but if you do launch that V1, the Arado behind it is gonna get a nasty burn in it's tail!

My 12 AH (12,000 mAH) NiMH D-cell batteries have arrived from the USA and I have loaded them up. They came from www.batteryjunction.com and cost about $6 each with $40 for the airmail. I have posted a set of photos in the "Building the model/Radio Control/Battery packs" directory and on my Flickr photosite. The following shows the 2 battery holders. One of them has been opened up, ready to have the batteries inserted. The leads at the front are to connect either a single battery holder (at 6v) to the charger or both battery holders in series (to give 12v).

I have been a bit delayed with my Bismarck build due to work and workshop construction committments. I am currently up to issue 132 on the build. I took some photos at the recent Brighton Modelworld and will post these here shortly. I have also been finishing my Sun, Earth, Moon orbiter and will post photos on the website here shortly. The most important thing has been the conservatory and my new workshop. These are nearly complete. I have posted pictures below. My wife has insisted that this has priority so that she can have the dining room back (after I move out my 9ft Yamato and its steam plant from the dining table) and has a nice summer room, as well as having space in the garage after I move out my machinery and wine/cider making gear and all the maturing bottles and flagons. The workshop has 2 areas (see external photos below). The righthand area, which is about 75% of the length, is the main workshop and has a 10ft heavy bench against the back wall for the heavy machinery - lathe, pillar drill, grinder, mill, etc. The front area, under the righthand window, has a 12 ft heavy bench, with extractor system ( so I can steam my plant without suffocating/gassing myself). In the centre of the workshop is a heavy duty "I" beam built between the top of the front and back walls with a 1 ton chain lift on a moveable trolley so that I can easily lift my 9ft Yamato steam plant and put it on the bench for steaming etc. The lefthand window looks out from the "winery" where I can store and work on my wines, ciders, champagnes, etc. The inside is being decorated and fitted out at present and I will post pictures of this shortly, when it is nearly complete. My wife has insisted that I fit blinds to the windows so that she and her guests are not disturbed by the site of me in my old, oil-stained clothes working on my equipment !! This shows the area of the garden that had to be dug out and walled prior to work starting. The open area left after the building will be paved to form a patio and barbeque area. This is the new conservatory This is my workshop.
