As my Bismarck has ground to a halt, due to taking 5 weeks to get issue 84, then geting parts to be made up and stored for later use and finally to get the gun turrets, but unable to build them until I get the gun barrels (as I need to install the lifting mechanism first), and seeing others doing other builds, I thought what can I do next? Brass and superglue definitely do not agree with me, so first requirement was something with a lot of wood. Next, in my youth I became one of the first members of the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, long before we had any ships. When we got the Waverley, I bought a set of plans to build her, but over the years this has been put off due to the complexity of the feathering paddle wheels, made of course, of metal!!! So I have bitten the bullet, and following shows the progress of my scratch built Waverley. She is approx 54 inches long, max beam (including sponsons) of 12.5 inches. The hull is covered in 10mm by 2mm lime planking, the secondlayer being fitteed on the INSIDE! Hull window areas are 2mm ply in two layers with clear plastic to be sandwiched in between. Note that being scratch built, many problems have to be solved on the hoof, and forward thinking is essential It is very gratifying to get back to working in wood again!!!

This is excellent Swanrail and I look forward to seeing your model progress.
I used to live in Ayrshire and had several trips (or booze cruises as they were called at the time..) on the Waverley. It was a regular visitor to largs and would run day trips to Rothsey and Arran - happy days...
I recall that It had its fair share of bad luck (or drunk captains!) and was run aground on a number of occasions. Trust your model will have a quieter life...

Looks like a good start swanrail. A photo of the Waverly at the recent Canberra Model Shipwrights Exhibition. I know yours will be as good, if not better than this one.

The frames and keel are 8mm WBP (waterproof ply), the stringers and the planking are lime strip. The waterproof ply are scrap leftovers from my work on our railway cariage Annabel, which can be seen on another of my threads ("2nd. Model")- waste not want not!!!!!!!

Its beginning to take shape Don. Are you intending to sail her?Can you purchase the paddle wheels or will you have to make them? I think most of us building the Bismarck would like to get this brass behind us. All best
Matt

Hi Matt, Yes I intend to sail her. I already have the two motors which will drive each paddle independantly, via a chain drive. There is a paddle wheel kit, but unfortunately twice the size I want!!Will attempt to scratch build, but my main problem is finding some nice kind soul with a lathe who can turn up two bosses for me at 33mm long by 25mm diameter, centre tapped for a grub screw and with a 4mm centre hole for the drive shaft. I also need two feathering spider wheels, also 25mm diameter, 8mm long, with a 4mm centre hole.

Thanks Skyfire,. actually I have been planking for some 40 years now!!! It is nice to get back to some wood for a change, and at a size that I can actually see and handle, unlike all those brass bits!! The no. 150 refers to my picture catalogue, so I can easy recover any more pictures to add, just for my convenience!! Yes, she will be r/c, providing I can build the paddle wheels. Motors already built and waiting to go in, as also the rudder servo. Bissy has has had to go on hold while I wait for the guns, then I can build the gun turrets and hopefully make them work. Getting fed up with lots of tiny bits in my spares box waiting for Hachette to give me the go-ahead to fit them, sure to lose track of what they are and where they go when the time comes! Presume your wether is good now? Very cold, wet and windy here, not nice at all.
