Hi Chris. Start off with etch primer. You can get it at most car spares shops. AlanV

On the Titanic I gacethe parts a rub over with fine wet 'n' dry before removing them from the fret, just give the surface a key, and then primed them with Halfords white car primer. After that you can paint them as normal. You could use an etching primer instead of Halfords stuff, which is technically the correct way to go about it. Model train specialists will sell etching primer.

I would have thought it logical to assemble them first, the CA glue would struggle to bond them together through the paint, and scratching off exess paint where they are to be bonded together would only result in snapped and broken brass, and snapped and broken tempers!!!

Painting parts before or after you remove them ? Well, it depends. Things like hand rails where it's easy to scrap the paint off one edge, then I paint before I remove them. If it's going ot be a tricky assembly, like the latest issue we've seen in the preview (62 ?) then I'd paint afterwards. You can always mask off part of the fret if you don't want to paint it all.
