is there a top coat for the hull to be painted,if yes and if so would it not be best to leave the brass bits for the hull until finished with the painting so as to not cause a lot of work cleaning up the brass bits of overspray or shaky paintbrushing lol

With my model, I am going to fit real decks (ie planked!!) and of necessity, this needs to be done before the brass rails are fitted. This means I dare not spray the superstructure with the decks in place so will need to spray the brass bits and keep in a box until I am ready to glue them on. Bit of a pain, but my spraying is not my best ability and I cannot afford to wreck the decks because of it!!!

If you are going to solder and you have 1or 2 bit near one another you have to put in a heat sink. This is a bit of metal ie a crocodile clip in be tween them and hope fully this will stop the one you have done slipping or falling off.

question-am i to presume that the brass bits are left brass and not painted , if so then this will not be the true colour ,is anyone going to paint them or leave as brass ,if looking for realism then i think the brass bits would need painting to the correct colour to the version each person is painting to

So has anyone tried this solder paste yet on these brass bits? Interested to know as I have unearthed a couple of soldering irons.

I bought a couple of tubes of solder paste, but it turned out to be flux!!!(was hoping that it included some solder in the paste, but not) OK for soldering larger bits of brass (hope to do the catapault) but not really suitable for the tiny brass bits we have just got, as the solder might well creep a little and spoil the effect. (as I found when I soldered a 3mm brass strip to a scrap piece of brass)

Hi Don, Try just tinning the parts first where they join and then without using any additional solder, align them to each other and reheat with the iron. Try this first with off-cuts of the brass fret to see if successful.

Thanks for the tip Mike. I noticed when I soldered the thin strip that the solder still tends to exude slightly (I have a very fine solder bit) and in spite of being very careful, it spoils the edge. Tinning the small bits we get could only be done while the parts are still on the frame, else it would be nigh on impossible. Likewise tinning the main section would be quite tricky, getting just, and only just, the right amount of tin on the metal. Again, holding the small part in place would be very hard as the solder tip needs to be there as well! Any small mistake would be curtains for the fine detail on the brass work. In view of this, as much as I prefer soldering (many years experience with a soldering iron), I have reluctantly decided that superglue is the only answer. Hopefully, the catapualt will let me back in again with an iron!!!

Why do the etched brass parts come as 'kits' in each issue. Part 244 and part 257 could have been finished before sent out with the mag. The bits are to small for me to handle, even with small 'grips'. I lost a port hole cover already.
I know that there wouldn't be a lot to work on with the etched brass issue's, but I'm sure hachette could have found something to work on.

Remember Hachette want you to buy 140 issues!!!

More of a technical issue actually. You can only etch one or two layers of detail on a brass etching. (Usually half depth from the front, half depth from the back, or right the way through.) It looks like the doors and portholes add more relief than it would be possible to etch in one part.

Phew!
Just finished putting together a crane on the prince Of Wales battleship in 1/350 scale in Photo etched brass.
My lord, but that was fiddly......it is my sincere hope that the Bismarck in 1/200 will be a little easier!!!!
Still, it was excellent practice.
