Just thought I should add my two penneth. All the people who are decking the Bismarck themselves seem to be trying to split planks into 1mm strips with varying results. Has any one checked out the model dockyards web site. They have 1mmx1mmx1m. lime strips. Seems to me right thickness right width without all the hassle at 30p per strip? ??

The problem with using 1mm x 1mm strips is that you get no 'caulking' between the planks, unless you have unlimited patience and are prepared to paint each strip! David.

That is why I have opted for the 5 by 1mm strips! They are easier to paint, same price as the 1 by 1mm so you get twice as many for the same price. Only problem is cutting them in half, but I do have a Minicraft saw bench which makes light work of it!!!

That is why I have opted for the 5 by 1mm strips! Hi Don, Please excuse me if you've been over this before however I have to ask. I take it that you are intending to use planks 2.5mm x 1mm for the decking even though from what I understand this would be out of scale? Not that this bothers me I've done it before myself when a model required decking 1mm wide to keep it within scale. Personally I intend to wait and see what the Amati supplied deck looks like before I make any decisions. If I do decide to use strips for the decking then I reckon that lightly running down one side of the plank with a soft HB pencil does a reasonable job of simulating caulking. Caulking on this scale should be visible but not dominant which may be the case if paint or paper is used. Regards Greg.

Hi Greg, What happens is I cut the 5mm plank into two with my minicraft sawbench. due to the width of the blade, I am left with about 1.5mm (or just over) by the 1mm thickness. The 1.5mm side is already painted black. (one side only, else gets too dark at the joins) I then fit the planks on the deck using the 1mm thickness as the width, leaving the finsished deck about 1.5mm thick. This is the sanded down to even out the planks (the saw leaves a rough cut), to about 0.8mm final thickness, so each plank is effectivey 0.8mm deep and 1mm wide. The extra thickness (1.5mm) makes it easier to handle the planks, and as I pointed out half the cost of a 1mm by 1mm plank!!! When sanded level, I then use a scalpel to cut the planks to the required 30mm length, relying on the varnish to represent caulking there. Finally, coat with a matt finish varnish (several coats).

Hi Don, Thanks for the reply. Your method sounds as if you'll end up with a great looking deck. The idea of working with a 1.5 x 1mm plank then sanding it down after it is in position is preferable to attempting to start with a 0.8 x 1mm splinter. Don't know exactly what Amati are going to supply as the replacement planking but anyone who hasn't worked with really small slivers of wood is in for a real treat, not.
Regards Greg.

Quick question, the laser etched decks Amati are offering to those who ask for them......are they invidual planks, or still sheets shaped to the superstructure, but with raised texturing on them?

Hi everyone, can anyone who has already done issue 43 tell me if the part 206 is actually used or is it a template for part 65. I have not got to issue 43 yet, however looking at the german site it appears only to be used as a template for part 65.

I am still awaiting a reply to my letter about requesting laser etched planks.... Hi guys, I sent an e-mail to Jacklin regarding the laser cut planking. Below is the reply. Dear Sir, SUBJECT: BUILD THE BISMARCK.3F/123. Thank you for your recent correspondence. Please advice whether you wish to receive laser cutting planks. Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us directly. Yours Faithfully Jonathan Moleta Customer Care I replied that I would find out from you guys how the two types compare before choosing. When will issue 60 arrive in the UK and could anyone who receives the laser planking please comment? In the meantime, I will ask if it is possible to receive both types to make my own choice.

Thanks Mike B for the e-mail address....
Here is a copy of my e-mail that I sent earlier....this will be interesting..........
Hi Jonathan, I understand that the Laser cut decks will be made available as an alternative to the printed decks for the Build the Bismarck part works. I would be very keen to obtain these Laser cut decks. I am also led to believe that these pieces will be available in issue 60. I currently obtain my copies on a weekly basis from my local newsagent, so could you kindly advise me as to how I can obtain these parts from you. I am a member of the UK Build the Bismarck Forum on which I am posting my construction progress and I must say I am really enjoying this project. I am very impressed with the 'teasers' I am seeing on other sites (Germany, etc) that started construction at an earlier date than the UK. I eagerly await to your reply. Best regards, Dave.
And now we wait..............
