If any members (and I do mean list members only please) need any advice/help on IT subjects then feel free to contact me - I am "by trade" an IT/PC engineer although now doing something more worthwhile and fulfilling, but I am always available for advice and/or support on IT related subjects.

I could do with some help with my computer, well one of them
Lent (big mistake) my athlon 2400 computer to sombody so that they could do a Uni project when it came back it is completly buggerd, it seems that they went on line but dispite the computer running Updated Nortons 2005 they seemed to have picked up a spyware or similar programme called Brave Sentry (BS 2.0 security center) which is bloking the computer going on line & making it run even slower than a fully laiden Petrol Tanker!
Any clue how I can remove it, I have two computers the infected one and this one a Duelcore Athlon64 4200+ its like an Aston martin DB9 fast & sexy!

Hi Cliff, I notice that a lot of members have "avatars" after their forum names. I wanted to create one on Photobucket but it seems the only option available is to create a "cartoon" one. How did the likes of you, Napoleon and Nemesis create yours?

Yoddha, what's your opinion of external hard drives? I want to fit a second drive to my complicator and am considering an external. Is their much of a speed penalty in data transfer from an external drive?

Nem, they are a good thing. I've had one for years - once the system has learnt where the drive is you'll notice very little difference in speed especailly on USB 2.0>

Great stuff. That's good to know. I have no prob with fitting an internal drive from a technical point of view but external drives are much cheaper. Thanks, matey.
On another note, be very careful when buying from Dell. Through sheer luck I managed to dodge a bullet. The night before I was to submit my order for my new rig, Dell increased the price by £300.00. For this reason I had to put off buying a number of peripherals such as printer etc. It was a good job as I've since discovered that even though they list a number of options when you go through the "customize my PC" section, many of those options are in actual fact incompatible with Vista.
It's incredible that a company such as Dell, either by callousness or ignorance, would actively encourage ppl to buy equipment that you have no hope of getting to work. Just make sure you double check that whatever you're buying will work on Vista before adding it to your basket.

I've used external USB2 drives Nemesis and not had any probs. They are slightly slower when transferring data from and to a drive on the system but other than that, OK.
One question though, WHY VISTA?

Basically because we really have no choice, mate. Microsuck are going out of their way to make sure that new kit won't be supported by the older OS's so sooner or later we'll have to bite the bullet and get it anyway.
I'm on XP at the moment and had no intention of going over to Vista any time soon with my existing rig. It's only because I'm getting a new one that I decided there was no point in putting off the inevitable.
