Excellent work on the superstructure, Northman but isn't it going to be a nightmare to mask the decks inside of the railings when spraying the brasswork, or do you know something that I don't?

Mike, My solution is, after the decks have been sanded and sealed, cover them with Scotch magic tape or Frisk Film and leave there until the painting is finished. Frisk Film is a low-tack masking film used by airbrush artists. Obviously applying it will be a lot easier if the decks are finished before the brasswork is stuck in place. David

Hey there guys , thanks for the posts .I agree that it will be very tricky painting the superstructure , I have not quite decided on which camouflage I will do , Or on which way I will paint it .I will either paint it with paint brush (very delicately) and not liberal with the paint ,so as to get as smooth a finish as possible,or with an airbrush , this could be a problem as to be honest I have never in my life used an airbrush . So this is where I think i could have most problems . With the decking Mike ,it will be double coated with varnish and masked with tape so hopefully any over paint that may occur can be removed without damaging the deck .The hull though I believe I will try using an airbrush for the first time and just hope that it can come close to the standard of the more experienced guys here , any tips would be gratefully accepted . One thing though I have noticed with any of colour drawings of the ship is . How on earth can we get the proper white circle with the swastika on the red banner on the deck . I do not think Hatchette will provide a template for it and this I will have to ponder on as I was hoping to do the Baltic camouflage . So any ideas again would gratefully accepted .

I do not think Hatchette will provide a template for it and this I will have to ponder on as I was hoping to do the Baltic camouflage I think it's better to paint the white circle first (a little oversized) and then paint the red banner with the white circle masked of with tape (the Tamiya stuff is great). The swastika can be hand painted (pretty difficult I think) or with a (home made) template using some tape, a ruler and a sharp knife. All using a airbrush off course, it isn't difficult when you get the hang of it. It is probably smart to try this out on some scrap piece first. ;D Thymen

The Swastikas on the deck? One solution would be to leave them out altogether! If you assert that they were put on last, and that your model represents that, you might even be right. Plausible even if not true. If you do them and they turn out wrong, it might be harder to correct them - your decks would be messed up, easier to correct the black and white on the sides.
You could always do them later, in a year or two, if you changed your mind.
On airspray painting, see some of the Build Diaries.
Good Luck!

with an airbrush , this could be a problem as to be honest I have never in my life used an airbrush . So this is where I think i could have most problems . Don't worry, I used to use spray cans and had endless problems spraying just enough but not too much and getting drips. I bought an airbrush and compressor and the first time I tried it, the difference was like chalk and cheese - it was so easy that you must be doing something seriously wrong to cock it up using an airbrush. Once you use an airbrush, you will never look back. I sprayed my whole hull just with a cheap suction bottom feed airbrush.

Once you use an airbrush, you will never look back. I sprayed my whole hull just with a cheap suction bottom feed airbrush. Just a little warning, I used such a cheap airbrush (the Revell thing) for a couple of years for 1:35 armour models. But recently I bought a double-action Evolution airbrush (for something around €120) and now I never want to use that cheap thing again. Northman, I advise you to go to a airbrush shop, explain your situation and ask if you could have a go with a airbrush from the shop. When I bought my new airbrush I first had a go in the shop with a 'test' model on some paper, you'll see that with a (little) bit of practice everyone can use a airbrush. Thymen

Hi Rushzombie , the decking I am trying by hand . The lower half you see is when it has been sanded and untreated . The upper part has been varnished with antique pine varnish . I hope this was the answer you were looking for .

You could try a needle file - the brass will file down quite easily with a fine file.
