Some years ago, I picked up the bad habit of smoking. Now I'm so adicted that I really struggle to stop it. This I've tried many times. I thought it necessary to mention my real last attempt to stop this nasty habit as my experience from the Bissy gang is support, advice and sometimes a good hiding, as long as we reach the top. I'm currently using a pill called Zyban and are in my second day of not smoking at all. If I can keep it up for one week, I'm sure I'll win.

I found the best way to give up smoking was cold turkey on your first day of annual leave. You have no work stress and keep yourself occupied by reading, watching tv or going out, etc. When you get the craving, occupy your mind with something else and after a few minutes it will abate. After the first day, every day is a battle won. It is fatal to have "just one ciggy" as now you are starting again from minute one to stop smoking again. if you last out to the end of your leave, you will find that you have almost won the battle. After about 3 months, you will get the craving again but it will be much easier this time and will soon pass. Hope this helps.

I'm not a smoker, but I've seen several of my mates try and fail. The usual route to failure is, "I've done really well up to now, so I'll treat my self to just one. Just one wont hurt." Of course, that's followed by another, and another, etc.... and you're back to square one. Just like Mike and Paul said. Stay away from smokers as well...... they will be the first to say, go on, just one won't hurt. I had one mate who did succeed. Like Mike said, he gave up on the first day of a holiday in Spain. Complete change of environment and no stress helped him. He also got the company to pay for the patches he used. There was a sting in the tail tho. He would have lost his annual bonus if he didn't succeed in giving up !! My dad gave up about 20 years ago - before there were patches or drugs to help. He switched from ciggies to Polos. Of course he then had the hassle of giving up Polos, but that was apparently a lot easier than giving up ciggies Anyway, good luck with it - We'll expect a daily report on how you're doing

Hi Coenie,
I smoked for 30 years so you have my sympathy. Its an extremely difficult habit to kick and I also failed a couple of times. I finally quit 4 years ago using the cigarette inhalers. I found these to be really good as it gives you something to do with your hands if you are having a drink, which I found was the worst time!
You also need to change your routine so you are not thinking about a cig at the difficult times, eg after a meal. I would finish my meal and then go for a short walk.
What helps here in the UK is that smoking is now banned in all public places which makes it a bit easier. As others have mentioned, its also wise to avoid others who are heavy smokers but thats easier said than done.
My wife and I smoked our way through £300 worth of cigs a month so, after giving up for 6 months, we treated ourselves to a new Audi as a reward.
Hope some of this helps and good luck.
Gordon.

Coenie, I have used Zyban about height years ago. I'd like to warn you about this pill. First, it was originally an antidepressant called something else thirty years ago. They found that when prescribed to patients, they were quitting the smoking habit after a while. Once it had fallen into the public domain, they lost their royalties and then marketed this medicine back as Zyban to make big bucks again. But it still is and remain an old generation antidepressant...
The first weeks, it gave results. With side effects. By the end of the first box, side effects of all kinds increased, of which among others, to affect my renal system. I can tell you that it gave me a prematurely foretaste of what men can meet when reaching over the 50-60s with their prostate! A very unpleasant experience.
If you look on the net for info about Zyban, you'll find scary comments left by previous users of the pill. Beside, some people started back smoking later after having enjoyed the side effects in the meantime. I can suggest you to drink a glass of cold water when feeling like a cigarette. That helps. But there's no stronger medicine than the power of the will itself. Except maybe the hypnosis therapy employed by some hospitals on this field. It's soft therapy and give good results, apparently...

Day 3: Still holding!!
Thanks for all the advice. I'm gonna try all of them.
Robert, I'm aware of the Zyban risks, but thanks anyhow for sharing your experience.
Me and my doctor is monitoring every step of the way. So far so good. Hopefully I'll be lucky as ph. (Not the restart part!!)
Strangely enough my wife and daughters haven't noticed my intentions yet, so it appears my smoking was not so disturbing to them.
Tonight's celebration: A nice piece of medium-to-rare steak and chips + bottle of Pinotage.

Only arrived home at this hour and very little time to continue with my Bismarck. Tonight's celebration: Early in bed and SLEEP. Maybe dreaming about the dancing girls.
