Day 5: So far so good! At one stage today the craving nearly got the best of me. I remembered Robert's advice of the glass of cold water and it helped. Thanks again Robert and then for the other guys for your ongoing support. Tonight's celebration: The ol lady found out I'm busy kicking the habit... the rest is banned by forum rules. ;D

Day 6: Still on right track and smell the roses much better.
As you know it's spring in SA and I think I probably choose the right time to quit. You know the smell of blossoms and everything nice is more intense than I could ever imagine. Beside the money saving part and the health issues, this enhanced sense of smell is great and a good motivation.
Tonight's celebration: A night out in the pubs and restaurant - non smoking areas of course.

Day 7: I think I'm through the worst part now. I still experience cravings but can handle it much better. I even tested myself last night at a party standing next to smokers. Nothing came from it even after a few whiskeys. As you guys are also part of my motivation, I'd like to give a weekly update only up till this month end. There after I'll turn my attention to spoil me with something nice with the money I'll be saving. Hey Mark, you're right especially my first coffee in the mornings. I can't beleive that I actually spoiled the taste with a ciggie. Oh and thanks for the K but I had four and there is still four. Just asking you know I need all I can get!!

Friend of mine had a holiday in Russia on the money he saved when he stopped smoking - he put that money aside so he could see it grow, making it real rather than just spending it on something else day by day.

Thanks guys.
I calculated the minimum I'll be saving in SA.
It's currently about R25.00 per packet of 20 ciggies per day x ave of 30 days a month give me R750.00. This add up to R9000.00 per year.
If I Presume the exhance rate at 12 rand to the pound, it means I'll be saving 62 pounds per month.
This is much less than eric's daughter's 40 to 50 pounds per week.
It's either ciggies are much more expensive in the UK or eric's daughter smoke much - much more than I did or I stopped smoking in the wrong country. ;D
By the way, if the exchange rate is so favourable, I don't think there's any excuse for you guys not to come to the soccer world cup or at least visiting our country some time.

As far I I know Coenie, a pack of fags here is about £5 or so, she smokes a pack a day, and about double that at the weekend!
Keep going with it, there are clearly some worthwhile rewards!!!!!

It's not a straight price comparison - it also depends on how much the taxes are. nm

Week 2: Still holding out!! During this week I discovered that I was awake by about 03:00 every morning. I immediately suspect the Zyban pill. A visit to my doctor assured me that it's normal in the process of nicotine withdrawal. Still experience the cravings, but less than the first week. This week's celebration: Took my wife and daughters on a river boat cruise today including lunch and drinks for about 4 hours. (I know I must start to save to buy something better, but for now I need to spoil myself to keep up kicking the habit.)
